One of my goals was to find a method of firing a photo onto a mug. These photo mugs were available from barber supply companies 100 years ago and the originals are very collectible. Here is an example of my results so far:

As you can see, this method produces a nice old fashioned sepia toned photo which is permanently fired onto the mug. Other decorative work can be applied as well (for example society/fraternal or military emblem, or a persons name, special date, etc, or any combination of these). In this case I just added gold trim, but there are many other options available. The photo I used came off of Google. I could use any photo to do this. It could be a photo of yourself, someone else to be given as a gift, or just about any image of anything that can be uploaded or scanned into a computer.
