You can get thread inserts for timber, but I don't know if the thread gauge and.pitch would match a D/E head.
Almost all the older Gillette DE heads are 10-32,If you look at Johns Razor above the upper coller is epoxied into the handle so no drilling and tapping is needed.
If one was to make a new handle and just screw the head into it, it would look sort of wonky IMO.
The modern made DE heads I have had in the past are all made in China,They will work fine but the Quality is lacking,JMO
By wonky do you mean that the wood up against the head would look wrong? I can sort of see how that would be, the collar looks nice, and as you say it solves the thread issue.
