I turn hundreds of brushes a year. My maple burl supplier dropped me an email about a slab of hard maple burl he had and wanted to know if I was interested. That was a silly question. This should make a few hundred brushes. Gorgous burl, no inclusions and 100% figure.

Of all the burls I've seen, I still think maple burl has some of the nicest figuring in it. It just looks so rich when its oiled.

There's a lot of very nice flame figuring in that section. Reminds me of Briar burl. The slab looks simply awesome!!

No, it is about a year old and dry. It is hard maple not big leaf maple so it is very dense. They make baseball bats out of this wood (without the burl). You just have to properly finish it. I have another big order for SRD and all of this wood is dedicated to Don.

What you are seeing is not curl, it is burl eyes on the end grain. All of those streaks are burl eyes. When resawn that will put all of the figure on the sides of the brushes for the best effect.

I can never decide which way to situate the burl growth. I think both directions look lovely. your right though, the more desirable way of doing it is the way you stated. Nonetheless, that burl will look super when turned, I'm sure!
