The loft is from the very top of the handle to the tips of the knot.You measure it.
You're asking how deep to cut the hole in the handle, aren't you? I'm curious as well. I remember a thread where someone did it too shallow and it made for a floppy useless brush.
If there is no "rule of thumb" for knot setting depth, I guess it would be a matter of cutting and dry fitting until you find the depth you like.
How about just drill the hole deep enough to allow you a 52mm loft and see if it is what you want. If it is too "tight" shim it up with pennies till you get the "looseness" you want. If it is too "loose" at the 52mm setting drill the hole incrementally deeper till you get the "tightness" you want. Once you get what you want glue and forget.

What bob said,52 is middle of the road for face lathering and bowl lathering IMO,you want a looser knot, you go higher,stiffer you go lower.
