Default Setting depth for the knot?

    Gents,

How do you set/determine the mounting depth for the knot?

The loft is from the very top of the handle to the tips of the knot. You measure it.

So there's not advantage to mounting it lower (less than natural spread) or at height (max natural spread)?

An all around good loft is about 52mm,depends on the knot,52ish will serve you well.

You're asking how deep to cut the hole in the handle, aren't you? I'm curious as well. I remember a thread where someone did it too shallow and it made for a floppy useless brush.

Ah...I see. You're thinking about "available bristle length". I was thinking from the perspective of making the knot 'tighter' or 'looser' by mounting it deeper or shallower in the hole....

The loft setting, will in your words make the knot looser or tighter.

If there is no "rule of thumb" for knot setting depth, I guess it would be a matter of cutting and dry fitting until you find the depth you like.

How about just drill the hole deep enough to allow you a 52mm loft and see if it is what you want. If it is too "tight" shim it up with pennies till you get the "looseness" you want. If it is too "loose" at the 52mm setting drill the hole incrementally deeper till you get the "tightness" you want. Once you get what you want glue and forget.

What bob said,52 is middle of the road for face lathering and bowl lathering IMO,you want a looser knot, you go higher, stiffer you go lower.
Your questions really have no pat answeres, sorry.
