In addition to loft height, you can also open up the diameter of the brush handle. Giving more lateral area to bloom will also create a floppier brush.

Thanked: 3225As much as I would like to take credit, it was really Pixie who gave you the starting point of 52mm. People do think about about loft, it can make a real difference on how a brush feels on the face. You also have to consider what loft works for you with one type of badger knot may not work with another type of badger knot. Boar and synthetics may also react differently. If you build your own you have the opportunity to customize the feel to your personal preference. As an alternative you could just order this The Variable Loft Brush by Chris Moss 22675 - Shavemac and be done with it.
