Found this an interesting feature, the dark line is the tusk nerve root, the top cap will have the same, going to try and save them in the finished handle.

Curious how dark and solid that line is if its exposed.
I've got a customer with about 40 slats ivory used for burnishing leather from a shoe factory he said, bout 8 inch long pieces an inch or two wide, he said I can have them when he found them when he found them they were warped so figured they were useless, told him I can flatten em so thankfully he didn't toss em. Can't wait for him to drop em off.
Can't wait to see how thar brush turns out
It might be a good feature to incorporate with scrimshaw?
Always wondered what the center was like, thanks for the info.
The anatomy of a tusk is actually quite interesting (at least to me)
The nerve runs the entire lenth and exits at the tip,Elephants can actually feel with Their tusks like we can with our fingers.

That is cool,
I hope it works itself into the finished product for you.
And thanks for the information Bill!
Do not think I can save it all, maybe a bit on the base.

Unless you think it will break, PLEASE continue. The thing will be cool, maybe dribbble some CA into the cavity.
An elephant's nerve passage. I would like it! :D 'Look! There is where the nerve ran!' No one has saved that. Considered it scrap.
Bit of history. Awesome! :tu
Dunno prices on ivory but I've been eyeballing some carved foot and a half long tusk tips at a local flea market, but it ain't cheap.
Keep the pics coming I looopove progress pics
Will not break,is not a fracture,is a cavity,it will dictate what it will be
Interesting Bill! Keep us posted!!
Ray

Wow!
We get to see the beautiful brushes made by you and others but this one has character.
My first impression was "this is a man's brush" whose purpose is for our hobby of best-in-practice shaving.
Great job.
Dave
