Just from my own experience you did the right thing waiting and filling the "honeycomb". I turn Elk antler on the lathe until I hit that "honey comb" and once I have the desired shape will seal it with 2P-10. I thought I had it sealed key word thought...., until I started using it and the antler would bleed, and stink! whew! I've set it aside until I can pop the knot and reseal it. I don't think you'll have that problem because you left most of the outer portion of the antler in tact.
