    Default Another Antler Brush

    Hello everyone'
My second brush I've made. I intended it to be a long handle brush but the first time I went to drill it, I didn't notice on the other side that it had drilled through the wall. I shortened my handle & put more CA in the honeycomb to harden it up. BTW, I did that the first try also, it just went wrong. I applied several coats because it was draining down the center. I let it set overnight & went out in the garage this morning & went at it & all went well. I drilled a 28mm hole for a same size silvertip badger brush knot. The handle turned out to be 58mm tall. The loft is 56mm & after it bloomed it had 80mm diameter. Hope you like it.

Looks good! What did you use for the base?
Just from my own experience you did the right thing waiting and filling the "honeycomb". I turn Elk antler on the lathe until I hit that "honey comb" and once I have the desired shape will seal it with 2P-10. I thought I had it sealed key word thought...., until I started using it and the antler would bleed, and stink! whew! I've set it aside until I can pop the knot and reseal it. I don't think you'll have that problem because you left most of the outer portion of the antler in tact.

I just put the CA in the honeycomb to harden it. I don't have my lathe here now so I used a drill press for the hole. I used a 5 minute clear epoxy & let it set for s few hours. It worked well for my shave. When I was trying to shake out the water the knot fell out so I mixed more epoxy because I didn't use enough the first time so I blew the hole out with air & made sure it was dry. I then sanded the bottom of the knot to roughen it up. There wasn't much epoxy in the hole when the knot fell out but it was sealed with epoxy. I let it sit awhile & glued it back in with more epoxy this time. It seems to be holding. I don't think it will fall back out. I didn't have that problem with my first brush. You can see my first brush under "My First Brush".
