Knot question

I'm restoring a rubberset number 3 .. I have a hole a lil bigger than 24 mm opening.. I bowl lather and face lather and hate floppy brushes.. I was gonna go with a tgn two band finest 24mm fan.set at 48mm I like the silvertips but the two band finest is awesome.. Any suggestions..loft height knot size or knot type..golden nib even has a three band now??

I would go with something like a 24mm and as for the loft size I would wait till you get it and do a dry fit. Set it in the brush and see if you like how the brush performs. The knots are usually 1mm bigger or smaller so you might have to do some shaping. Don't glue it in place yet that way if you don't like it you can lower or raise it to where you like it. I agree about the finest. The one I have now I use about 95% of the time over my HMW, silvertip or boar. I did a reknot with a 21-22mm finest that I set at about 50mm. I don't remember the exact loft or size its been awhile. I used double sided tape to see where I wanted it. Once I got it where I wanted I glued it in place.

Do not do anything until you have the knot in hand,48/50mm loft will serve you well.

In all fairness, I saw your OP, but didn't have the answers for you,,,sorry ; most members here would not be able to answer those questions. There are maybe a dozen brush makers here that could give a proper reply to the OP.

I think all your measurements are perfect above. The finest 2 band knots are really nice like you said. I think that 48mm is a perfect loft for that knot (24mm.) I would be a little hesitant on getting a 24mm knot into a pre determined hole of "a little over 24mm" Some of the knots have a wider section above the plug that can be bigger. You may want to look at a 22mm instead of a 24mm. In my opinion the size difference once set is very minimal.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.



See how right above the epoxy plug it flares out wider. You may have a hard time getting that down inside the handle if the badger knot has epoxy that has creeped up into that section. This often happens with badger knots.

I'm with HARRYWALLY, I have a Rubberset #3 and if I'm remembering correctly I used a 22mm Silvertip from TGN

* FWIW Wanted to add, that I recently purchased a 24mm Finest from TGN and sent the knot to Bill to make me a sweet shave brush and I think he said it measured 26mm above the plug

I like the silvertips but the two band finest is awesome..

Finest knots never worked for me,many Silveritps yes but i have soft skin-tough beard so i need something more scratchy
Your skin maybe it's different,choose according your needs.
Base knot 24mm is fine,i prefer in badgers 45-48mm loft
You can fit a 25mm knot in a handle with a little work.more that 48mm height is not working for me in Badgers.

Regarding the knot size - I've restored a few Rubbersets and found that I could increase the hole if required in order toaccomodate the problem HARRYWALLY spoke about - I've fitted 24mm and 26mm into Rubbersets both from TGN. If you can go for the price the 24mm High Mountain is fantastic.

Not if you drill them on a press and run your live center in the cup end of the brush. A drill bit is more precise and when you are making a couple hundred of them they all have to be exactly the same. But yes you could or for a one off use a rotery tool with a sanding drum. Lots of options but I find two quick drill bit changes faster and more accurate.
