    Default First Brush making attempt

Have been holding on to a piece of Ohio history (The Council Oak Tree) for about 25 years just waiting for the right project. Found a pewter dish at the thrift store to melt down and cast (something else i've wanted to try for a long time) and here's what i came up with. what do you think? I think i might have found another hobby. already have another piece of wood picked out and i'm on my way to the thrift store for more pewter.

Color me impressed. That is an excellent execution, especially since you CAST the pewter?!

actually pewter is pretty easy to work with. melted it with a propane torch in a tin can and it can be "cast" in wood or even cardboard molds. i turned it on my lathe with regular turning tools. i learned a lot on this project(such as, don't wear sandals when working with molten metal) so hopefully the next one will be even better.

That's pretty darn cool! How can you tell the pewter from other metals?

a lot of home decorator items are made of pewter. the bowl i found for this one actually was stamped "pewter". Just bought a tray today made by Wilton that is pewter. only difference was i only paid .75 for it. it just has a certain look, kind of grey silver.
