Thread: Help w/ TGN Silvertip

Hello there so I was gifted a shaving handle from a member when I purchased a razor from him. Well I got the knot in and set it in the handle around 49mm loft. Seemed like the knot just didn't want to give up the lather. Rather it was coming out the sides of the brush. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue. Thanks in advance.

Newbie here but it sounds to me like too much water if your soap is coming out the sides of the hairs. Hopefully someone with more experiance will poat up soon. And therez the possiblity that it needs broke in more so it soaks up the lather.

Hmm, that is a possibilty I suppose. I am using the same technique as I do with my other brushes. Thank you gasman for your quick reply. messaged the gentlemen who made me the brush, but either his inbox is full or he's super busy cause he hasn't gotten back to me. I am going to put the knot back in and use it a few more times to see if it just needs to be broken in.

I have to agree it is too much water. Is the brush more soft than you are used to? That is a way that you may not use the normal amount of water.

Also if someones inbox is full you'll be told they can't receive messages

So's he's probably sick of me by now lol. I am going to take ya'lls advice and try using a little less water. I am just really confused because I have synthetic that I like to use sometimes and its "floppy" no back bone at all and the lather does not perform this way. I should state that the lather wasn't falling out the sides, I.e. dripping on the floor. Again this is a new problem for me as my other brushes do not have this problem. P.S. my brushes range in density I have a boar, synthetic, finest badger, and the new silvertip.

Synthetic doesn't hold as much water as badger, it tends to fall right out, so badger is going to absorb more water. All brushes have a learning curve, and most new guys haven't gotten to that point yet. Just dip your tips in the water then shake it out, then load your soap.
Now here's the important part, whip up your lather either in your palm or bowl or face, adding only 2-4 drops of water at a time to your brush. Keep doing this till your lather is right.
Look up Geofatboy videos on making lather, he's got a good one, but this usually works. Anytime your lather is hitting the floor you got too much water. Tv

Thanks for the replys. tcrideshd I believe you misread my last post, the lather was NOT falling out the sides, I.e. not dripping on the floor. I apologize for my grammar. The lather was building up on the sides, instead of like my other brushes the tips. Also I realize brushes retain water differently I have three different brushes and do not have this problem with them. I am wondering if I set the loft to high or something, my question is if I lower the loft will that help the brush from releasing lather from the sides. Currently the loft is at 49mm. What size is the TGN silvertip knot you are using? Is it a 2 band or 3 band silvertip?

Depends of the knot, some are more densely packed than others , but the rule of thumb is 2x the diameter, and then you can adjust from there, if you like backbone a little less if you like floppy more loft, if your knot is a 24-25 then you should be good if your knit is quality. Tc

And maybe I missread but I still think it's a water issue, soaking a brush tends to pull the lather up in the brush whereas if you only get the tips wet it all stays on the ends

Did you wash the brush?

I wash all new brushes, it will dramatically improve their performance.

Put a dime size drop of hair shampoo, in your palm and lather, rinse and repeat. Then put an ounce of white vinegar in a cup and fill with warm water to the top of the knot, soak for 15 – 20 minutes.

Rinse and wash again with shampoo, rinse well and dry hanging. The knot will now be in full bloom and should perform better.

I soak my brushes in hot water foe a few minutes, the time it takes to strop a razor and get my other gear out, then shave.

I soak and wash my brushes a couple time a year. I have a Simpson that is still going strong, that is over 40 years old.
