Hello there so I was gifted a shaving handle from a member when I purchased a razor from him. Well I got the knot in and set it in the handle around 49mm loft. Seemed like the knot just didn't want to give up the lather. Rather it was coming out the sides of the brush. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue. Thanks in advance.
Newbie here but it sounds to me like too much water if your soap is coming out the sides of the hairs. Hopefully someone with more experiance will poat up soon. And therez the possiblity that it needs broke in more so it soaks up the lather.
Hmm, that is a possibilty I suppose. I am using the same technique as I do with my other brushes. Thank you gasman for your quick reply. messaged the gentlemen who made me the brush, but either his inbox is full or he's super busy cause he hasn't gotten back to me. I am going to put the knot back in and use it a few more times to see if it just needs to be broken in.
I have to agree it is too much water. Is the brush more soft than you are used to? That is a way that you may not use the normal amount of water.
Also if someones inbox is full you'll be told they can't receive messages
So's he's probably sick of me by now lol. I am going to take ya'lls advice and try using a little less water. I am just really confused because I have synthetic that I like to use sometimes and its "floppy" no back bone at all and the lather does not perform this way. I should state that the lather wasn't falling out the sides, I.e. dripping on the floor. Again this is a new problem for me as my other brushes do not have this problem. P.S. my brushes range in density I have a boar, synthetic, finest badger, and the new silvertip.
Synthetic doesn't hold as much water as badger, it tends to fall right out, so badger is going to absorb more water. All brushes have a learning curve, and most new guys haven't gotten to that point yet. Just dip your tips in the water then shake it out, then load your soap.
Now here's the important part, whip up your lather either in your palm or bowl or face, adding only 2-4 drops of water at a time to your brush. Keep doing this till your lather is right.
Look up Geofatboy videos on making lather, he's got a good one, but this usually works. Anytime your lather is hitting the floor you got too much water. Tv
Thanks for the replys. tcrideshd I believe you misread my last post, the lather was NOT falling out the sides, I.e. not dripping on the floor. I apologize for my grammar. The lather was building up on the sides, instead of like my other brushes the tips. Also I realize brushes retain water differently I have three different brushes and do not have this problem with them. I am wondering if I set the loft to high or something, my question is if I lower the loft will that help the brush from releasing lather from the sides. Currently the loft is at 49mm. Thanks for the help guys!
What size is the TGN silvertip knot you are using? Is it a 2 band or 3 band silvertip?

Depends of the knot, some are more densely packed than others , but the rule of thumb is 2x the diameter, and then you can adjust from there, if you like backbone a little less if you like floppy more loft, if your knot is a 24-25 then you should be good if your knit is quality. Tc
And maybe I missread but I still think it's a water issue, soaking a brush tends to pull the lather up in the brush whereas if you only get the tips wet it all stays on the ends
Did you wash the brush?
I wash all new brushes, it will dramatically improve their performance.
Put a dime size drop of hair shampoo, in your palm and lather, rinse and repeat. Then put an ounce of white vinegar in a cup and fill with warm water to the top of the knot, soak for 15 – 20 minutes.
Rinse and wash again with shampoo, rinse well and dry hanging. The knot will now be in full bloom and should perform better.
I soak my brushes in hot water foe a few minutes, the time it takes to strop a razor and get my other gear out, then shave.
I soak and wash my brushes a couple time a year. I have a Simpson that is still going strong, that is over 40 years old.
It is 24mm 3 band silvertip grade A knot from TGN. I am going to reset the knot at the same loft as it was and try getting just the tips wet instead of soaking the brush whilst I shower. Also try and use less water than I normally would. Again guys thanks so much for all the help.
I just checked a handle I re knotted with a TGN 24mm 3 band silvertip, can't remember the grade. I like backbone in a knot and 3 banders are not really know for that. End result was that I set the loft at 45mm, had to check that twice. That is lower than I would set the same size 2 bander.Quote:

As mentioned, wash it a couple of times with shampoo. I've gotten a couple of high-end knots from TGN that were filthy with the badger equivalent of lanolin. The wash waster after the first wash was stomach-churning.

It's really too bad we couldn't get a VS knot for you. They're much better than the current offerings at TGN. Dang Chinese New Year!
Anyways, sounds to me like a lathering issue. You need to do some experimenting with that silvertip knot to see what works best. They are extremely soft and tend to hog a ton of lather. I have a 26mm grade A that I still use and love. Although it's one of TGN's earlier offerings when the knots were still at a better quality.
I agree with what Bob has said, try loading with a dryer brush and then adding water gradually until you have the consistency you like.
So I have been farting around with the brush and definitely found out that the brush just simply eats more lather than my other brushes. Loaded with a dryer brush wetting only the tips as Tcride had suggested and it helped dramatically. Also loaded a bit more soap on the brush than I normally do making a thick paste like in the video there. Added water like I usually do with the drip method. Agree with you Andrew this brush just seems to hog lather. Thanks again for all the help, also Andrew I am already thinking I want to order a couple brush handles from you soon. Want to definitely give my dad one soon.
Plus one on VS knots, it's been almost two years since TGN had decent knots, when Bill was making all of my brushes everything was fine till the last two,, and he was having to cull quite a few to get one good one.
Now fast forward to recently, and Andrew repairs a vintage brush for me with a VS knot and let me tell you it's one of my favorite brushes, and after that I ordered a couple more for some f my travel handles too. It ain't my Shavemac knot but it's very good at a great price.

Bill had messaged me right about at that time Tc, and asked me if I had any ideas for good knots. He said the same thing. TGN quality had gone down hill, and I agreed. It wasn't hard to see when the knots show up looking all raty, and dusty. I told him about VS, but I'm not sure if he ever tried her or not. It wasn't to long after this, that he started having his health problems.
Virginia Sheng 2 bands are where it's at for affordable Chinese knots IMO. The Silvertips aren't too shabby either. Aaaaaaaand, I know someone who loooooves the 3 band finest she sells as well.

I,m not sure if he got around to using them, I have ne of the last few he turned, other than the news he already had and decided to sell, and it was a TGN,, ITs one f the brushes I,m going to send to you for a re knot, tc
