First shave handle, walnut

So I acquired some walnut scrap slabs from a friend. Decided tonight I'd play around and see what comes. I have this only as practice I have not ordered any knots. Walnut, sanded to 400 then boiled linseed oil applied. I modeled it off this wally world VH. It is same dimensions just prettier. I wish I could share a video of this brush, right under the knot in the wood it looks as though it moves or changes color ever so slightly.

I like it. The wood looks really good-interesting grain and nice color. The shape is a good one and several companies have a brush shaped similarly.

Is walnut suitable for a brush material? Since it has been used for gunstocks forever it must be okay around water.

Well to be honest I don't know if it is or isn't. Great question. And great point about gun stocks. Only reason I am using walnut is it was free and in slabs. Thanks Sir for the feed back.

I was worried about water and my handle, so I CA'd inside the knot hole. No problems for the past few months, but couldn't tell you for longer.

Dude...I had a 30 once. Too much for my narrow self! :rofl2:

I can't even tell ya what these for Tom. No clue about that stuff yet. Just made em:) I'll have to get a variety of knots and see what happens.

Pretty grain in that handle. Looks great, nice shape.

Well, the knot is at the mercy of the taper going down a good bit, minus some sidewall strength.
The knot will need to be sunk some?
Going by your thumb there, I think a 20mm knot?

Unless you have huge hands, of course! :)

You could make a 'barrel' to go on top of this and make a larger and cooler brush?

It will be awhile, save for knots and I don't have a Chuck right now. So no way to secure to anything for drilling the knot hole far as I know.
The grain is super cool on the first one. It changes color in the light. My pics don't do that one any justice. Thanks Mike.

My old shop teacher and friend told me to CA them. I'm afraid of the CA cracking or crazing over time. Eventually I'd like to sell some here and there and would hate a return. Thanks :)

Dang fine looking brush handle! And I really like the grain in it.

A couple more fun ones, this is just relaxing. Not much to think about just chill and spin. The first picture is my favorite so far. Second pic is a bit longer handled brush, inspired by Sharpton. So, I couldnt take pictures because I about lost my mind, but I was about to finish one of these walnut handles to send to a guy for an opinion and my gouge caught and tore out a chunk. I actually stood at my lathe in disbelief. Doubt it's repairable so I imagine I'll be turning a duplicate.

Sadly gentleman it got thrashed in the finishing stages. :/ so I'm going to try and fix it or turn another. Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated.

Stuff happens, it's the nature of the beast. Wasn't sure if that was the one you were talking about getting gouged

Yea that's it Dave. I don't know yet if I can salvage it. I had to walk away for a day or two. It happens but still sickening.

So this is round 2. Sanded and linseed applied. Next more linseed and wax. Drill, part and finish with no problems hopefully.

I coat the inside with a few coats of poly urethane, then glue the knots with waterproof epoxy.

Hmm, makes me wonder if I have any poly at home or not.... thank you for the tip.

Nice job Eric! Cool to see you learning how to do this. Hopefully someday I will get a lathe and do the same.

This is some really nice work. Sorry to hear about the setback, but you have come back strong. It's hard to beat the look and feel of natural wood.

To wrap this up, I sent the remade handle to a gent in Oregon. He purchased knots and was looking for handles to fill. He received the handle the other day and sent a pic with the knot in. He is a happy fella. Attachment 278797
His loft after knot is set should have been around 57mm, which through a bit of research seems to be at the high end for a 24mm knot. I'm hoping this does not cause any floppyness for him. Thanks for looking guys.
