By William Graham Sumner. Amazing how political economy was so well described - in 1876. If you've not read Bastiate's "The Law", you lead a deprived life. 'About 1/4" thick. 'Plain simple language that had my jaw hanging open at how profound the simple things were about law.
Lonely Planet's 'Travel Writing'. This is essentially a book that repeats itself over and over by saying "It doesn't pay well and isn't worth it unless you love having no life and living in stress."

Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games. She wrote it for children and young adults, but this half century old dude is enjoying it very much!
H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction. A beast of a book at over 1000 pgs, its all Lovecraft's stories. Its quite packed, his writing is very dense, descriptive, and imaginative.
Dan Brown, Inferno. I love the public library!
The role play game. Never heard of it. Don't really care too much though. I'll look it up sometime if I want to know. Heard of D&D though.

Just finished world war Z,very strange indeed, kid is burning the vid for me,will watch it next week.
It was better than I thought it would be, you will like it.
I was talking about World War Z the zombie movie. I think zombies are silly,,, so I did not expect to like the movie.
Sort of on topic;
I've been cleaning out my middle bedroom(storage room) & I had lots of books to get rid of. I kept thinking that for years I would have a big house with a section for a library, that was 30 years ago. Now I'm overrun with boxes of books. So I went through them & took 3 boxes to the local library to donate. They have a back door drop off/donate area. I knocked on the door & the library person opened it up. He was nice, but did not want my books. He says they are receiving so many books that they are overrun too. He said they have to give most of them away at the front door for free. The really nice ones that I paid $25.00 for when they first came out, usually are sold for $1.00. He says that all the public libraries here are experiencing the same problem. He felt sorry for me & remembered me from last year, so he took my books.
He said that people are not coming for the books like they used to.
I don't know why.
Why don't you shift all the stuff out of that middle room, slap up a heap of shelving; Or better still, build some bookcases and screw them into the wall and start your own library room, John? I wish I had a spare room I could do that with, I know that!

That's an idea,,,,, I guess the books are no longer as important as the other things still in the room, it's still packed, just a little better organized.
I just think of all the books I've gotten rid of over the years and wish I still had many of them in my possession. I refuse to get rid of books unless they are too far gone. I'm still trying to sort out several boxes of them myself. My wife wants to ditch them, and when she raises that issue, I remind her that I want to ditch all the junk she has down in the garage and around the Pool Table...End of argument ;)

Well I had the same feeling for years about my books,,,but I had too many. Many I got for free or yard sales,, I decided that maybe someone else would enjoy a good book for a cheap price,,, sort of passing them on, so to speak. I did keep all of my Joseph Wambaugh books, my Asian books, tactical work books that might benefit my son some day.
But I had to let most of the others go.
I really like the idea in the following link. I do not endorse them and would not spend money for a sign or premade one etc. but am thinking of risking copyright infringement and building my own.
Plans and Tips for Builders - Little Free Library
Interesting idea, I see more & more of the "free" libraries in some resturants & businesses, where you take a book off their shelves & return it later. The one you linked to I would be worried about punks putting in stuff that is not books; I'm assuming this idea is outside by the road somewhere.
Fat Sarge Down: (The Real Iraqi Freedom Story): Mike Tarver: 9781451285871: Amazon.com: Books
This is what I am reading. Signed by the author and he is a friend of mine. Havent got very far but its pretty funny.
I have sold some books to used book stores and understand they have to make money but it almost an insult to me what they are willing to pay. I could have a yard sale and make more but that is not my thing. I might as well give them away and if by chance someone puts another in its place I might be introduced to something good that i would never have thought of.
You have that right. Many libraries are getting rid of their books and a lot of small bookstores are going out of business. I now buy from Alibris on line and it is cheaper than buying gas to go four miles to town. One of the great Mpls used and new book stores is full up on incoming and will take no more. Garage sales around here are really book heavy. I have a good set of bookshelves on a wall and they are full of books and series that I have come to like over the years.

Does anybody think that these devices that have ebooks on them has hurt regular book sales, new & used?
I would say it goes with out saying, that if you can download any title you want without leaving the house, or trawling through loads of second hand shops etc then why would a lot of people go to the effort. I do buy secondhand books, and my wife would not consider an e reader, she loves thr smell of books.
My mother in law in the other hand who has a very bad back uses an e reader all the time.
I'm not sure how much they have affected regular book sales, but from what I have read about it over here, it has done so quite significantly.
For me personally, I have hardly bought a paper based book in about three or four years now, ever since I got my first Kindle.
I love the thing, and have well over 200 books on it by now.
I read in spurts, so to speak. I'll read three books in the peroid of a month, a lot for me,,,then not read one for two months. I just don't like the idea of another electronic device, having a part in my life,,,not sure if you can understand this. I like looking through old book stores & yards sales for books. I feel like I've found something nice when I find a really old book in good condition. I like finding old books with lots of pictures in them. I cannot get that feeling from a down load.
