Entering into a controversial topic has, to my knowledge, never gotten anyone banned. However, the way some people have gone about it has sometimes lead to a timeout or banning. And that's got nothing to do with whatever the controversial topic is, but how we behave toward each other. It's basically about respect and the "golden rule" - do unto others etc.
However, some controversial topics have historically never gone well from day one - like gun control for example. They always, without fail, get personal. So the leadership team makes decisions on those for the overall good of the forum, and some - like gun control - are made "off limits". IMO it's a shame when that happens, but evidence is evidence and the one thing I am certain of, having peaked behind the curtain a few times, is that the leaders of this forum always have its best interests first and foremost in their mind.
As for things like the Classifieds, you scam you ban. Again, the best interests of forum members and the forum in general is the guiding principle.
