I saw this article the other day and thought of posting it.
Opinion: Elephants slaughtered for trinkets and terrorism - CNN.com
I respect the opinions of others but IMHO some things are just worth more than the right to have pretty razor scales, piano keys and the like. I have absolutely no problem with hunters who use the whole animal for food, clothing and the like but slaughtering these regal creatures is just not right. The arguments above about using material from dead animals or circus animals are certainly valid but perhaps as with wearing fur from exotic species this (ivory use) should also be something that is not popular any longer.
I totally understand your point. I also have no problem with anyone following the letter of the law. What I am saying is that perhaps just as an antique exotic fur coat can be or is no longer popular to wear/use that on a voluntary individual by individual basis ivory old or new might take on the same fate. Fact is that if there is a demand there will be a slaughter and if terrorists are profiting as the article suggests that's worse still.
I harbor no ill will to your use. I would like to change the mindset if possible to help these species survive.
Saw a video a few months back where they were grinding up ivory. New and old. Some of it was intricately carved hundreds of years ago. Just tossed on the conveyor and shredded up. Art. Kinda sad to waste that.
Makes complete sense to me. Plenty of other materials to use for scales. People abuse "pre ban" so make it illegal to sell. They are still being killed as we speak because people still buy the stuff.
That being said.... This won't stop anything.
What people have to realize is that two countrys,China and Japan are licenced to leagally buy all the Ivory they want whatever the source.
No mindset can be changed with these buyers.
Africa sells millions of lbs of Ivory to these nations, sure they may burn a ton for PR, makes no diff, the slaughter will continue.
It has been Proposed to ban the sale of mammoth Ivory,Why??
