Old Time Horse Drawn Farming Demonstration

On Saturday the 5th of April I accompanied my youngest daughter and her two children Bowe 'Boss as I call him' age 5 and Chevelle 'Chevy as I call her' age 2 back home to Pomeroy in Garfield County for the Eastern Washington Agricultural Museum's Annual Old Time Farming Demonstration at the Garfield County Fairgrounds. It's right beside the Museum's buildings which are located on the Fair Grounds. What a Great Time! There were horses pulling plows, chisel points, seeders etc. Sorry but I accidentally deleted those pictures! I'd post the 'bang head' but I'm out of 'insertions'!

There was a woman with a two wheeled buggy giving rides (especially to children).



This man had a hand operated rope making machine and when he wasn't demonstrating for the adults he was letting the kids make a length of rope about 2 ft long and they got to keep it as a souvenir! He was adding some colored string to the basic twine and my 5 year old grandson thought that he'd really done something 'Special' or Cool/which of course he had! While she was a little too young to participate much, my granddaughter 'Loved the Horses'!





Someone had a Very Large Steam Engine fired up and running!



I've never seen so many vintage tractors in one place in all my life! This is only a shot of 'part' of 'one' of the rows! Some of the people were taking turns driving theirs around just to show that they were still operational! I got this owner to stop so I could get a picture while his tractor was running and he was more than happy to accommodate me! The sign says it was made in 1948!



My grandchildren got to hold their great, great,great grandfather's branding iron that I had donated to the museum and be able to see the block that the original blacksmith had tested that iron on! The blacksmith would test the finished branding iron on the inside walls of his shop after heating it in his forge. When the building was going to be torn down the boards were saved and then blocks made showing each brand. This is the branding block that Henry Krause did when he made my great great grandfather's branding iron, it's #93.



That brand was originally registered on December 20th in the Washington Territory. I have a copy of the original registration





They had a nice lunch available at a very affordable price.

If anyone ever has a chance to attend such an event I highly recommend that you do!

It's interesting how "old time" stuff has evolved into contemporary language:

to set something aside, it gets "ear-marked";
a livestock brand became a trademark or "brand", like Cheerios;
to get moving, one "gets up a head of steam";
to improve one's skill, one "hones" them until one is "sharp."

I wonder what our grandkids are going to make of Twitter.

The dates for next year are April 4th and 5th. I'm planning on attending again. Maybe you can bring that beautiful bride and enjoy a day of fun! I'd love to see you again and hopefully introduce some of my family to you and Mrs. GSSIXGUN!

Maybe next year you can tell the Texas DOT that there are some damaged guard rails Wayyyyyyyyy up North and you can drive up to the event at the states expense and we can have a beer or two together

We have the Conestoga Museum, that does something similar to this too. They have a Black Smith forge they fire up, Tin Smith, potter, broom maker, a ram pump running, hit & miss engines. In the museum they have an area setup like a barber shop, books, Native American artifacts, farming models, a real Conestoga Wagon.
