After a few days deliberation I have decided to withdraw from this thread. I know the article was satire, but I saw it as commentary on matters very close to my heart (like George Orwell's novel, he is obviously not talking of pigs taking over a farm). I was deliberating whether to respond to any particular comment or not at all, but after a few days of consideration, decided this was not the place to start a debate on the subject.
I apologise (Aust spelling) if I offended anyone. I must admit, personal circumstances had me in an unusual frame of mind when I placed my comment, and I should have had better judgement than to post such a comment on this forum.
If anyone would like to discuss further, I welcome any PM, but do not want to post anything to divide the group on this thread or others.
If you look for trouble you'll definitely find it ........ and if you're going to bark, you better be able to bite. Those peta folks will do better to stick to abusing women in fur coats.
Happened to post following Andrew by chance after reading page 1. So my comment is not a reply to his post above mine.
Now, reading further on through the thread it appears it was a hoax anyhow ? What a waste of duct tape.
Andrew
You are a gentleman and have every right to state your view as do others who do not share that view. Rest assured you did not offend me personally. I can't see any need to apologize either.

I'm with Bob on this one. I disagreed with you that does not mean I am offended. You have a right as a gentleman to take up whatever causes you wish; that I -- or others here in this thread -- disagree with you and that we felt the actions of those in the article merited the response is a point of discussion... between gentlemen.
Still, if you feel you cannot continue the discussion without becoming offended or giving offense, then I salute your honest introspection.
"Sometimes saying I'm sorry isn't saying you are right and I am wrong, sometimes it's just saying this relationship is more important than my ego"-I don't know who said this but it ain't mine. I know it's saved my marriage a few times though. :)
Turn off the "news" and your brains will thank you. Much better things to think about.
No group of individuals is going to change anything without huge economic resources (billions) which enable legislative influence and military power. The companies are too big for governments to control any more.
Public Opinion is akin to a ball batted around by a kitten. The kitten is the politics controlled by the Companies in charge. And the Media scrambles around trying to make their buck and also do as they are Told (half of that is diversionary).
I have a degree in that mess. I've stepped completely away from it. Wasted way too many brain cells on stuff that simply repeats itself and is completely controlled by $.
Hey - I realize now I was had on this too...it was from a website that says, "an accredited online satirical publication." So when I said I knew it was fiction, or satire, I thought it was a true story posted for it's satirical content, but that it actually did happen. Now I realize that it was not only a satirical piece, but complete fiction as well - so count me in as duped as well, and I usually don't fall for these things.
Everyone's opinion matters, and sharing it in a respectful and constructive manner is always a good rule, if it starts to go personal or negative, that's always a time to stop, because I find discussions then becomes conflict for the sake of conflict, or it descends, in the immortal words of PeeWee Herman, into a, "I know you are, but what am I."
I apologize, this story was meant for a laugh, and ended up turning into something else.
In conclusion, I will quote the immortal words of SRP member Ryan82, and say, "keep on stropping in the free world!"
Gawd, I wondered why everyone was banging on about a fictional happening now I understand.

You should come to Queensland if you want to see how bikers can get nailed to a cross. We've got new anti-biker laws, and our Premier (I guess the equivalent to a US state's Governor) has gone on the record as saying any lawyer who defends bikies in a court of law are basically scum. Long live the legal process (and civil liberties)! :)
James.
Satire or not, all bikers aren't bad. We here in the US have quite a few biker groups who stand up for kids and fallen soldiers and the such...I happen to belong to one of them. We deliberately put ourselves in the middle of families and groups who actually protest fallen soldiers. Most are veterans or at the least red blooded Americans. We come in force so that all we have to do is let our numbers speak for themselves. We escort bodies from funeral homes to the burial sites & keep the rif-raf out and if they are actively protesting we leave our bikes idling....the good folks don't hear a thing but a pleasant rumble.
Man, I just can't get over the fact that people will protest at fallen soldiers funerals. Support for our little adventure in Afghanistan was never very high here but I don't recall ever hearing of a group protesting at a fallen soldiers funeral here. I can't print what I actually think of people that do that sort of thing.
Bob
Some people in this world are only concerned with them selves they do that to gain the news media attention and the news media gives it to them. I know we need a good news program but they need to have some come since and compassion for those who have fought and died for there beliefs and there families feelings. I do believe the way the news stations believe is anything for ratings. there are just some things the world doesn't need to know.
Don't worry we had plenty of media coverage here with the repatriation ceremonies and the actual funerals. I am sure if there had of been protests here it would have been covered too. It has not much to do with the news media and has everything to with a society that breeds these types of people who lack the common dog to know when and where it is appropriate to protest. I was not a particular supporter of our involvement in Afghanistan but it broke my heart every time we got a body back and saw what it did to the families. That is the time to be supportive and not push another agenda.

I agree the news should take responsibility and try to be impartial and not sensationalist. I find Belgian (tv) news sources fairly balanced because they report fact and don't do opinion pieces (that's what other shows are for). During my trip through the US, US tv news was quite a shock to me :)
As for the world doesn't need to know some things... maybe. I'd agree when it concerns people's private lives.
Unfortunately you can still push one side of the argument without the need to interject opinion. You can steer peoples impressions of an issue to the way you want by using several tactics. If the issue is controversial, you can bring two opposing views onto the show to debate it. On one side you bring an expert on the issue, the other side can be conveniently represented by a moron, leaving the impression with the viewer that one side has a stronger argument. If you want to give the impression that vitamin C is bad for your health, you can bring on ten doctors that swear to it and explain their point of view and ignore any other Dr. who disagrees to create an impression that ALL Drs believe this. As a network, you don't have to take a side. You're just reporting what is. If there is a story that doesn't support a view the network has, they may simply opt not to report on it. Or, for the sake of defending that they do in fact report such stories, they could run them at 2AM, Friday evenings at 7PM, or any other time when viewers are most likely tuned in to something else or tuned out completely. Opinion often sneaks in to the news room by what facts they decide to report and what fact they decide to ignore. When it comes to politics, the network may decide to show one politician's picture that was caught while he/she was making a bad facial expression and show the other candidates picture where they look their best. Opinion can find its way into a broadcast in many ways.
I don't know about others but the media outlets that report items from my POV are always the unbiased ones. ;)
Bob
That's what I mean. Belgian news channels don't bring in people to debate things. And they don't slant things in favor of certain politicians or parties. We have half a dozen major parties in Belgium, and half a dozen minors at least. Belonging to / voting for different parties is not considered something that comes between people or which influences hiring decisions. My wife and I vote differently, and my siblings and I vote different as well. that's considered normal in most families. So any news channel will have people in the newsroom who belong to at least half a dozen parties.
The whole for / against mindset is foreign to me, whereas in the US, everything is politicized and polarized.
When I first heard about companies and news networks in the US endorsing a political candidate, I thought they were joking :)
I wish it were a joke. I feel that our representatives are no longer functioning for the good of the country. Rather they are only concerned with getting more money/power for themselves and their "man behind the curtain." We (as a country) are already so obsessed with professional sports that the parallels with Rome crumbling while the people are kept distracted by the goings on at the Colosseum, it is scary!
I really don't know for sure but I believe everyone has some things that are private and not the worlds business. when you loose a loved one is one of many times. can you imagine what would have happened if the news had reported the rumors of JFK and the actress affair. The news media has no respect for anything these days. As others have said much better than me they are bought and paid for by certain groups.
