As far as i know, I would be allowed to own a firearm if i wanted one, there would probably be conditions on ownership and I might not be able to choose whatever I liked though. And besides they are not the only way to defend yourself.

No man is absolutely free, be it modern or some ancient society. We are all dependent from the world and people surrounding us, more or less.
Guns are great & fun hobby and something to occasionally carry at work, but have no much to do with self defence.
Stable society and general respect of life, all life, is the best self defence. Living in a society where i would have to arm myself for self defence wouldn't really be something i would like to see or live in. I would surely arm myself, legal or not, if i thought i needed to, but from where i live the idea seems absurd. Guess from that little part the society & it's people have done well.
Our society surely ain't ready or perfect, but things tend to turn better in time. Slowly but anyway.
Fredoom is a funny concept.
Living in a place were one doesn't need a weapon is freedom, and safety, to some.
Living in an area were one would feel unsafe without one, and lacking the funds to change that situation for yourself and your family is basically what the African-American slaves felt like 200 years ago.
Fredoom? meh, not so much.
Less power to whom exactly?
Yes that sure seems idyllic. The only problem is if you were around in those days you probably would have died in infancy or childhood from disease and never got to enjoy those things. if you had survived childhood there was a good chance you died of some mishap early in life and probably would never live to see your 50th birthday.
I'm very interested in the things that are stopping you from taking that wilderness life? US is quite sparsely populated and as far as I can tell that lifestyle is available, if not emigration to Canada is quite simple for a US citizen and there are even more opportunities for isolated and self-sufficient life. And there are other places in the world which offer the same possibilities.
As far as judgement by character and actions, I'd say you're idealizing the past - if anything people back then were far more prejudiced based on superficial and external criteria than nowadays. Pretty much every book that has survived the test of time contains testimony to this.
