I couldn't agree more, social media sites are turning society into narcissistic people with fake lives, geared towards making others jealous of them. It's easy to lie & portray a perfect life behind a computer screen. How many of these people post about the problems in their lives? Personally, I don't care what other people are doing all hours of the day, it's similar to a child starving for attention. I know that this is not what these sites were originally designed for, as they do make a good line of communication, but a lot of the younger generation has changed for the worse how these sites are used. JMO.
What troubles me most about this social media trend is the rapid response to ending people's careers and publicly shaming them for "perceived" remarks, usually taken out of context, or just simple human mistakes.
In Canada, we have a General who made a remark about men being "wired" differently than women, and that it may be responsible, in some cases, for the improper and extremely troublesome problem of sexual harassment in the military. It is a terrible problem that needs to be addressed, and that's what he was trying to do.
His comments were immediately taken out of context, he recognized within seconds of making this remark that it may not sound the way he meant it, and promptly apologized if it was taken incorrectly.
We now see the social media hounds, the vested interest groups of the Politically Correct, hounding for his resignation, his entire career of service dismissed, and he is being tried and convicted in the media and social media feeds.
Is this the society we want to live in? The slippery slope of Orwell's "thought crimes"?
What I have been seeing lately is a lot of so-called progressives, who shriek and howl at the slightest impropriety of speech, demanding a mob justice via social media. Free speech to them is their speech, and they are naive if they don't think one day this beast they've released won't turn on them as well.
Was funny, on another subject in the same newspaper on income splitting, where if there is one person working and the other is a stay-at-home parent, our Conservative Prime Minister wants couples to be able to "split" their income, to represent the work in home and lower their overall tax burden. A feminist commenter made a scathing remark about this plan, because supporting the Conservative Government isn't cool here, regardless of the merit of any policy, and remarked that it's about the "Man" staying at home so his "Wife" could be a good Stepford "woman in the kitchen". Was hilarious to watch her get ripped to shreds by other politically correct shrills for the "sexist and homophobic" remark she made - didn't she realize there were stay-at-home Fathers? Didn't she realize there were same-sex couples? She should be ashamed of herself!!! LOL!
I had quite the chortle at watching this politically correct woman get bitten by the beast she had previously unleashed on the General.
This behaviour, with the narcissistic need to portray oneself via social media, in my opinion, is indicative of how we no longer connect and try to co-operate with one another, as a society we've come to lack humility and understanding/empathy for each other, and it's become a game and contest to portray yourself as the most "hip", the most connected, and the first to rally the mob and dish out instant justice the second another person makes a perceived mistake - whether right or wrong, regardless of how it destroys another person's life.
Personally I have never "gotten" this social media thing and have no part in it. If you post your life and thoughts online then you deserve blowback for whatever you post.
Well said, Phrank
this place is as far as ill go for "social media". we dont have to pretend we have lives on the internet, but atleast i can enjoy reading or looking at straight razors on this forum
Phrank articulated some of the current social media/pc/Orwellian dilemmas in Canada very well. It is a beast that will bite them in their arse's soon enough.
And that Sam Elliot Pic RoloDave, it's soo going on my facebook page ;)
For the record I think I have the least # of facebook friends out there. 30,, just 30, and I know them all personally..
Cheers.
I am on Facebook AND Twitter, though Twitter is primarily an investment tool (long story, not important). Facebook has allowed me to reconnect with cousins I have overseas that I otherwise would have been isolated from through distance and time. It has been wonderful over the last few years to be able to reconnect with them, if only in this small way.
In short, social media has it's perils, but there ARE tangible benefits as well.
Like Dave I have never had a facebook or Twitter account and hope never to have one. Oth I do see that there are benefits too as in Orville's case. Being on a forum like this is enough social media for me.
Another downside to social media is cyber bullying which has driven more than one person to commit suicide because of it. Oth it can help to make things like The Arab Spring possible. Either way it is a powerful tool often misused.

The age of atomic energy was supposed to be for the benefit of mankind .....visions of hover cars and endless energy and all that. Then came the bomb..... and so goes Facebook.
I do Facebook, originally to keep track of my college age kids (who are now adults) and more recently to keep in touch with real friends who are far away geographically. However, I have to admit though "friends of friends" i've gotten more exposure to people's personalities and opinions than I want and need.
Thanks for making me think about it, Richard. I may review how I control my accessibility (and exposure) to people through social media!
As an employer, this has become a workplace problem as well.
People wanting to always check their damn smartphones to watch their social sites whenever they can.
Three years ago I had to implement signed policy that said they could not have their cellphones out side the break room and only could check them at their personal time.
Also! I have two friends that are very talented musicians. Both have toured the globe.
They got together and put on a small concert Weds night from 7:30 pm until 1:30 am for just 300 people.
Half of the damn audience were on their cellphones, looking down into their babysitters, texting, checking DouchBook, etc.....while about twenty people were less than twenty yards from every seat were working their butts off for them.
I hate social media sites!!
Rant off
I have met some awesome people on this site which I suppose could be considered a social media site but.....In all the time I've been on here I've seen it kept decent and not treated like FaceCr-P When I really need to get chatty it's either PM or Good ol E-mail which works juuuuuust fine. I also use this thing called a telephone not to be confused with a um.... smart phone. It's really cool...no dropped calls,it takes messages so I don't have to be on a leash wherever I go,the clarity is amazing(not one garbled conversation ever)And you get to hear the persons voice and actually feel like your conversing with them. What will they think of next. I call my friends and family all the time and if I need a picture they magically send it on Email and it does not eat up all my time.
I got onto it to keep track of my kids and grandkids....
Funny thing, I got a friend request from a popularly worshiped shaving Guru:
Okay after knowing of the guy for years I said OK. Funny thing I started getting spammed by his online store. Who'da thunk it?? He is still friend but all his posts are now trashed automatically.
Ditto for another friend with way too many money making businesses.
Have a friend that is a wonderful photographer.. Two or three posts of beauty a day, I can enjoy that.
Politics I do not need... I have friends that are automatically dumped into trash rather than show on my pages.
I have a friend with a warped mind...His stuff always sets me thinking...that is who sent me the bicycle video.
Like a razor; social media has an edge and may yet be the only tool for some things we need accomplished.

Bump for five years of change . . . or not!

Getting worse, I think. I have always perused my wife's FB page. There are some now who continually advertise their business. They think everyone is blown away with their career, weight loss, politics, religion, etc. Some MUST imagine themselves as attractive. Selfies galore. NOT mellinnials either!
Cannot look any more. Horrible, but they do it every day as if someone cares.
Kindof sad, really
I never had a Fakebook account. Every time I make the mistake of getting on my wife's account to see what my relatives are posting, it makes my skin crawl. I'm convinced that Facebook more than any other factor has made people dumber and more gullible.
That said, I use the internet A LOT, and have most recently gotten an Instagram account for my razors, trout pics, flowers in my garden, travel photos, etc. Plus it helps me keep up with my son in Japan.
Apparently now there are even websites for guys who actually talk about shaving of all things-whodathunkit?
Yep this is social media
I was always anti social media and still am to a degree.
Once I learned that it could be used to spread the word of Edge Dynamics I got involved.
I do however always stay true to myself and pride myself in being genuine, not being fake nor a sheep :)
I have 99 YouTube followers now..and a Facebook group.
I see it as building a base, a platform for better things in the future... It is also quite interesting..
My cats have an Instagram account. Can't keep the blighters off it.
Ive always been a no social media guy, until a couple days ago. I was asked to start putting a notice on srp twitter account of the giveaway. So there it is. The beginning of it all. But i hope it doesn't grow to much more than that. Hell, i thought only Trump did Twitter. But we have 100 plus followers over there.
Jerry you’ve been doing it since 2016
From my experiences, it is now really important to hold to the rules !! One forum was targeted by the freebies demanding persons that follow media for giveaways
There were a batch of them collecting razors and product . . . later to sell or trade with no understanding of use or utility.
JMHO
Richard
Thank you for that Richard. I will think about this if i notice much of that going on.
TC, i never thought the forum as being social media, but i guess it could be thought of that way. More to think about.
