Sad happenings in the UK

Nice to know you guys know where ny country is. However i couldn't place all the states in US [emoji1] I don't think we got a perfect system in Denmark. Our present politicians are mostly incompetent. Never has the people has lesser trust in political leaders in Denmark as in these years.

The great thing about the US is that sometime you get a real fantastic person, as president. When Obama was elected the Danes wept with joy. He didn't do as much as we hoped, but he showed us hope for the western world.

I learnt to shot as a boy about 10 years of age. My old uncle had some real old German weapons, stolen from the troops in the occupation. I tried a Mauser rifle and a Parabellum officers handgun, with 7 marks in the handle from killings made by its former German owner.

The rifle was great, but the gun couldn't hit anything [emoji4].

It was great fun thou and highly illegal. It started my shooting sport and I did ok. [emoji6]

My uncle was in the resistance. He told me the biggest problem was to get guns and explosives during the war. They had to steel it from the Germans. Many died in the process and that's the reason that he never turned the weapons in, after the war.

About 200 Danes saved 4.000 judes in the war. Almost the entire Danish population. They hid them an sailed them to Sweden, still a neutral state. He got the Parabellum in such a operation, but wouldn't tell more about it, or what happened to its owner.

Today we have a national homeguard supplied with guns, should the Germans try again. We also has Military service fore all young men at 18 years.

I'm not against your weapon law. Who am I to judge? I just stated I didn't understand why guns are so important to you. Christian clarified that.

We are not perfect but I have doubts that your country is either. It is great that we have this medium to discuss these things.

Remember, all democracies are doomed to fail. The more we transition from a republic to a democracy the closer we come to a dictatorship.

I don't think anyone has asked anyone else on this thread to dislike their own country or to change their own country to be more like other countries in the political structure. Rest assured that I do not look at other countries with longing in that respect, nor do I care if they have the same political structure as mine and foremost I would not think of telling anyone that my country is the best in the world and all should emulate it. There is only the country we live in, warts and all. It is up to the citizens of a country to change something if they are unhappy with it. If you like the status quo then there is nothing wrong. If a Republic is not at least in part a form of Democratic governance then how can it be said anyone is fighting for "Democracy"?

Yea, statistics are problematic but are on of the indicators of differences.

How anyone would be delusional enough to think that "terrorism" can be prevented by restrictive gun or knife laws is beyond my grasp. We have created time and time again the right conditions for terrorism to thrive and grow. We are reaping what we have sown. That is NOT saying I agree with terrorist acts just the they have a cause be that cause a real or imagined wrong. You have no choice but to resist terrorism but it would be a lot easier if we did not create petri dishes for growing resentment in by others that can be used by some to foment terrorist acts on a large scale.

I never did care for flag waving nationalism which reminds me too much of what went on in Nazi Germany when nationalism is carried to the extreme. Personally I would prefer a quiet pride in my country regardless of what my government wants to sluff off on me. No I do not blindly trust my government either oth there needs to be some form of structure in a society.

I pay taxes in order to have a structured society to live in and also to get services that I want. It is a matter only of how much structure and services you want from a government. To have none would be anarchy and probably a pretty ugly place to live in.

I am sorry that anyone has to feel defensive about their own country.

There may be terror attacks on the horizon but before the Jhads it was the IRA blowing us up .

Some ones always trying to blow you up but I still don't feel the need to defend myself.

I think we can probably all agree to disagree on attitudes toward "defence", particularly on the best way(s) to go about it. From what I've seen over the years it is not only a personal thing but also strongly cultural as well.

My personal view is that violence begets violence. I also believe that the "cold war" solution to personal safety doesn't seem like much fun. The idea that someone won't "pull the trigger" or hurt me because I might do the same back to them might very well provide a practical level of safety, but it doesn't do very much for me on a spiritual or emotional or human level.

But I do understand that for many people that approach does provide them with a certain level of peace of mind, which is great.

My defence pretty much relates to facts, not emotion. If I am traveling through areas with higher crime I am prepared for possibilities whereas around home I am not really concerned.

Being scared of guns, knives, bats, hammers, screwdrivers, etc. Is the reason people want to ban them from other people's use. Usually the freedoms people want to take are the freedoms they think others should not have.

Freedom is letting other people do things you don't like.....

Speaking of cultural views. I told a guy I was shaving with a straight and he said that is what older guys in his neighborhood carried for self defense in the 70's....
