Well what you find if you look at the statistical information on places that do not have a lot of guns available, mostly in very poor areas, or those with very tight laws, is weapons of choice change. In most of those areas people arm themselves with knives and garrotes. It in part shows that guns and knives don't kill people, people kill people. It is mostly about the attitude of the populous. If the attitude leans towards violence is ok or violence is just a part of life, then no matter the weapon of choice, people will die, life is cheap. However in areas where violence is not widely accepted violent crimes are very low. So it is really about people and not weapons. Campaigns like this are really more about people trying to change attitudes by the symbolic gesture of giving up your weapons. Tossing a knife on a bin does not make for less knives, because the factories pump them out by the thousands every day. Most are for non violent purposes, but every pointed or blunt object could be a weapon for violent purposes.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Unfortunality many think that simply outlawing weapons will stop crime!

Outlawing stupid people would be much more effective, but the bins would need to be much bigger.

Hey, I can riff off the last thread I was on:
STOP the corrosive effects of off gassing!
Turn your celluloid scaled razors into WW243.
Bins will be located throughout the forum.

Yup, violence is a people problem not a tool problem. If you live in a society where violence is an accepted way of dealing with issues then whatever weapon is easiest to hand gets used. No easy solutions and hard to change societal attitudes.

I don't think any society condones it, but every society has that fringe group of wack jobs that is going to commit an act of violence. Outlawing and confiscating one type of tool just means they'll use another. Get rid of guns, knives, bats, golf clubs, lawn darts, rolling pins, and any other item that can be weapon iced and murderers will turn to rocks. Sad that lawmakers can't wrap their minds around this simple concept. It is a people problem, not a tool problem.
