His Great-Grandfather was born in Wallingford, Connecticut, est 1667!
(Winston Churchill, that is!).
So the next question is, Why don't we have politicians of his caliber today?
Very simple answer,, we get what we ask for.
Winston Churchill.
Men gifted as he was only come along once in a blue moon, then the occasion has to come up that reveals their greatness, or their failure. He certainly rose to the occasion and held that island nation together against all odds.
If you take all of our Presidents, how many were 'great' men ? Washington, Lincoln, FDR (AFAIC) and even Truman. How many lives, American lives did he save by dropping the nukes on Japan ? Took great intestinal fortitude to take on the presidency after FDR died, and he wasn't at all prepared for it by his predecessor.
Look at Lincoln's generals during the War Between The States. General George McClellan was the hot dog of the bunch it seemed, but he turned out to be ineffective, and the star of the show turned out to be a little guy from Ohio named Ulysses Simpson Grant. Now there was a man.
It's pretty simply in my eyes.
Men of that caliber can make more money with less stress nowadays. The only people that want it go for power or prestige.
