Honestly, I have to confess that I never considered the fact that a cell phone used near a gas pump could be a hazard.

Reading through all of these "Pet Peeves" I've come to a realization.
They almost all come down to............................
Wait for it..........................
wait....................
STUPIDITY!!!!!!!!
Not on the person with the Pet Peeve, for the most part, but the ones doing the action causing it
Thought I should clarify that:D
Some of them require the use of a brain to even come up to the level of stupidity.

People who take 'selfies; all the time on Facebook. There is a tobacco pipe group where guys ugly as sin dipped in misery daily put up one or more 'selfy' with an even uglier pipe hanging out of their gob. :soapbox:
OK, I now have an anti-peeve...
The descriptor "ugly as sin dipped in misery" is awesome and somehow, someway, I need to use this phrase someday.
That is the beginnings of great literature, at the level of "it was a dark and stormy night."
You guys are killing me. Great one jimmy. I hadnt heard that one before. And i agree with utopian, got to try and use that one.
I hope i dont run across that tobacco group any time soon.
Ron anything electrical can cause ignition around gas fumes. Now on to the truth, it's a very rare thing with most modern electronics, the heat form them or spark internally doesn't reach LEL the lowest level of explosion. There are even some instances of static electricity ignition. These warnings are put in place because of lawyers and the laws of OSHA, the real danger mostly comes from....... Like Dave said. Wait for it. STUPIDITY
I've seen more than my fair share of explosions around gas and oil, so far none from a phone, a non encased light bulb that broke, a hammer strike that caused a spark, lightning, and so on. Sometimes the gas we have coming out of a flow back tank is enough to fuel a good size town, yet no phone has ever set on off. Can it happen ?, yes. But you can see it's something that's just a warning because it can happen, like most anything. I mean are you going to quit using your phone around your gas stove?
Ok now on to another peeve, guys asking for advise on a forum and go exactly the opposite way then bitch about results, nuff said. Tc
Yeah, I'm with Ron: "ugly as sin dipped in misery" is classic. It's not just the inherent narcissism of constant selfies, it's often done in extremely inappropriate places. In Berlin last summer, I saw a young couple taking a selfie among the concrete monoliths of the Holocaust Memorial. Honestly I wanted to slap the hell out of them, but just minded my own business. I have heard of this kind of foolishness too happening at Auschwitz and other hallowed places.
