Also beware of national aid organizations like United Way, etc, who collect during disasters but don't necessarily use all of the money for the disaster. I recall that UW or someone of their class got a lot of negative press several years ago (Hurricane Sandy?) because they were not directing all of the donated money to the disaster at the time, but were instead skimming a bunch off and keeping it for other purposes.
If you can actually donate to someone who is on the ground and doing work, I think that's a lot more efficient.
