Thread: Nazi SS monument in Canada

Never in my life would I have thought there was such a thing in Canada. Apparently there is, on church grounds no less, which has been spray painted with graffiti. The local police are investigating it as, wait for it, a hate crime no less. The whole situation is absurd and I am ashamed to be a Canadian this morning.

I find that article quite disturbing on many levels. The most disturbing part is that we have an SS monument in Canada.

Thanks for posting it! It is absolutely preposterous. How is it even legal to raise a monument to war criminals in the first place?!

Shocking.

When so many Canadians gave their lives to combat the Nazis and so many escaped them to come to Canada and so many perished because of their actions, it is hard to understand how erecting such a monument could be rationalized.

Yes, followed closely by it being on the property of a "Christian" religion in a country that fought a 5 year war against everything the Nazis and the SS stood for. The police investigating it as a hate crime is an added layer of irony that underscores it.

Interesting. As you might know, we have a "similar" problem here in the states. A small minority of people wanting to tear down statues that commemorate soldiers who fought in our civil war or who owned slaves. I see those as reminders of how far we've come, not a monument celebrating slavery. Many of those people were a important part of the formation of our country despite having flaws.
Now, the SS is a whole different story. The fact that it has stood that long is shocking. The idea of calling it a hate crime shows the ignorance of the politically correct. (Hope this discussion doesn't cross the allowed rules).

Yes, the story on the SS monument is different from what is happening in the US regarding monuments. The defacing of the SS monument is a hate crime because it speaks to the motive of the perpetrators which moves it from garden variety vandalism to hate crime. It has nothing to do with political correctness but is very ironic nonetheless.

I see what you mean. As i was thinking about it further (not from the perspective of the vandals but the original people who put up the monument)
i wondered, is it appropriate to put up memorials to those who gave their lives for a cause even if the cause is found later to be wrong or flawed?
