    Default Any opinions?

I put this here on purpose because I believe there are many answers. I have just received another bottle of per shave oil, that's all it says, pre shave oil,no instructions, nothing. Now I have tried to shave with it, no good, rubbed it in before shave, it dissolves with the soap, and more importantly, didn't help with the shave either. Does anyone know what this stuff is and the proper way to use it? As far as I can tell, it's good for softening your beard, kind of. Help please.

Some folks like to use it. They feel it pre lubes their beard to make the going easier. Personally I never had much use for it though I did try it a few times.

There are many varieties and brands. Some are terrible some better and some better yet still.

Yep went that route in the very beginning, didn’t take long to realize, it just didn’t help. I good soap don’t need any help. I only use Noxema as a preshave only Sunday shaves just because it’s my “ME” shave. Any other day face lather and shave. I tryed several and never got any benefit to speak of other than goopy lather

When I first started I tried a few pre-shave oils. Since then I have learned that a quality soap, well lathered, and a very well-honed razor work for me the best.

I never could figure out what pre-shave oil was good for, anyway. It just doesn't make sense.

If the goal is to hydrate the whiskers for a better shave, then applying oil (which presumably
prevents the absorption of water) is truly counterproductive.

OK, so it's good for the skin, but shaving soap removes the oil.

So maybe it should be used post-shave?

I dunno. Makes no sense to me.

Hmm...maybe it comes from "those electric shaver guys". The electric preshave preps are alcohol and oil so it dries your face and leaves a layer of lube so you get that premium baby butt smooth shave

Now I get it: Slippery face = smooth shave.

I tried it when i first started using straights and after the first use it went in the bin all you need is good soap or cream and a sharp razor

Yeah, you can find it at the supermarket right beside the hair conditioner in the not required aisle...
