So what is it ? ---- I don't mean the grossest (is that a word --- most gross (?)) or the most disturbing but the scariest as in BOOOOOOH!!!!!! Jumping out your chair --running for momma!!! scary. Maybe I can add the dimension of Tense --- afraid to move scary. So what do you think.

I don't usually get scared in movies (no, really). There was a moment or two in Evil Dead where I wished I was somewhere else, but that might have just been the gore. Alien was definitely a good movie.
Now I think about it, it's been years since I've seen a horror flick (actually, since I got married :hmmm: ). The scariest movies I see now are chick-flicks (and they're scarey for a whole different reason)

I don't get scared easily either (no really ;)) --- I usually find myself laughing in inappropriate situations ---- but the first Alien is a masterpiece . That movie managed to capture something --- a certain realness --- that I've never seen duplicated.Quote:

I've heard people talking about that one - is it The Hostel? People I know who are really into that type of movie reckon that one's gone a step too far.

yeah Psycho is a good one ---- I think the modern directors are going with the disturbing/gross = scary route ---- but to me scary doesn't have to be in your face gore ---scary is a keying into the "human as prey" thing --- fight or flight ----Quote:

i've been praying for a genuine scary movie. not gross, not jump-at-loud noises, but something that really makes you scared
i recently saw "1408" for which i had high hopes based on the trailer and it was a valient attempt and could have had me had it not eased up so early. I wish the main character would have went just a little more hysterical.

The 13th Warrior wasn't a bad interpretation of Beowulf as far as action movies go but it wasn't really scary. Got me interested in the remake though.
The original "Omen" (scary kid....) and "28 Days Later"...very disturbing, very unsettling.

I always loved the old black and white Universal Studios monsters. You know - all the originals - Dracula, Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Mummy, Wolfman, etc. Scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Of course they seem pretty tame by today's standards, but I still love watching them, and of course I will make sure that my kids enjoy them as well.
I don't really get scared by movies anymore, which is kind of a bummer, but I thought The Others with Nicole Kidman and 6th Sense were both spooky in a more "chilling" kind of way.

I highly reccomend The Changeling. No swanky special efffects, just good acting, direction, and production. Very scary.
For something a bit newer, The Ring is an excellent choice.
The original Exorcist messed me up.
Another scary one was not a movie, but an episode of the X-Files. The one with that "Toombs" character that would slither through vents and such and eat people's livers. For about two or three days I slept with the lights on and avoided heat registers and such.

I thought 'Wolf Creek' was pretty scary, but then I watched it (stupidly) while I was traveling around Australia in exactly the area it was set. :cry:
Another weird one was 'Signs' with Mel Gibson. Not gory at all but I found it intensely creepy when you first see the 'alien' on the grainy news footage, and also when Mel first sees a shadowy figure on his rooftop. That movie gave me several 'cold shiver' moments.

Jaws, I grew up in Fl. Part of the film was made near were I lived. My sister and some of her friends got to be extras. I wouldn't go near the water for a while.

The latest remake of the amittyville horror was pretty decent. If you liked the exorcist then you will like the exorcism of emily rose. It's scarry because it's based on a true story.
I'm with Justin on the original Alien movie. I've seen it dozens of times at home on VHS & DVD. We saw it at a special re-release on the big screen a couple of years ago, and even though I knew what was coming the screen, the darkness, the quality sound system still made me jump.
yeah --- I've seen it maybe 10 times and it still gets me ---- at the end when Ripley is trying to get to the escape craft ---- just the sounds get to me --- damn that's a good movie.Quote:

Another vote for Alien here, but an old favorite from the VCR days is Videodrome. We rented that one for a party back in the day, and nobody was willing to eject the cassette from the VCR after the end. The massive amount of beer consumed just might have had something to do with it as well.

I ran through the house turning out all the lights to watch TV with nothing but the glow of the cathode ray tube in the room. A commercial came on with lots of strange hissing a screeching noises and the camera zooming over the surface of a barren moon. The camera closes in on a lonely egg as the sound fades out and captions appear and fade away;
"In space ..."
"noone can hear you scream"
"ALIEN"

I stood up and turned all the lights back on and waited anxiously for my family to return.

The first time I saw the alien-chest busting scene, I didn't know what to do ---- I just looked around me and thought I ain't ever going to be right again . The looks of horror on the actors faces were so real. I actually hated that movie for some time after seeing it for how it affected me and was scared to watch it again (maybe a little PTSD or something -- no joke). But it has become one of my favorite movies.

Here is my short list of movies that messed me up:

happiness (the most inapropriately titled movie ever)
Caveat: i dont like horror. these movies messed me up for days and turned me off to something (like eating, or sex, or sleeping) for at least a day...maybe these are among my most disturbing movies ever, not my scariest movies...although the shining was real scary...i saw it for the first time after we moved to new hampshire as a kid...
The original 1959 "House on Haunted Hill" is the only film that made me turn on the lights in a darkened house.
Much to my surprise, "Signs" scared the hell out of me on several occasions. The Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" also bothered me, particularly the scenes with the heat-ray.
I have not gone further than ankle deep in open water since watching Jaws at the age of seven.
Slightly off topic, but my all time favorite "scary" comedy movie was "Mars Attacks"!!
I could have died laughing when the Martians heads exploded at the sound of Slim Whitman's singing!!:roflmao:roflmao AAH AAH AAH!! (Sound of the Martians)
Here's another vote for The Exorcist. The Silence of The Lambs also got my attention.
