This is a great example of appropriate use of an offensive word, (the N word) I do not believe it is intended to be hateful or derogatory in any way, it's use is clear and concise. And I would be surprised if it offended or was removed.
Sometimes you manage to be offensive and still be PC, again I don't think being PC is the issue, I do not have issue with how you say things. I do however often take issue with what you are saying.
In saying all that I would not wish for you leave,
but would ask you to consider how strongly you stand behind your beliefs and ask would you ask any of us to be less committed to ours.

Perhaps I've misread Shaun's point, or maybe I'm just loading my own negative experiences onto it, but I don't think the issue here is about making Boker rename an old product (fruitless and unfeasible), or even the perception of being a victim on this forum. I think the core issue is about being afforded the same respect as anyone else here if submitting a complaint.

If I were to complain about something (here or in the real world), I would expect courtesy and respect. Not cheap gags.

The Off Topic forum was reopened with the understanding that moderation problems would be handled with close to zero tolerance and if the person being moderated didn't like the call, they were to negotiate the issue in private with the mod and or the admins. Guys, the issue here is a tiff that's going on between GW and a Mod and really has nothing to do with the Boker Red :cen razor terminology.

I suggest that you guys leave it between GW and Kyle to resolve because, quite frankly, it's no one else's business. You weren't there, you don't know who said what to whom, nor the context of any of it.

Having seen the original posts, I must side with Shaun in his view that the demand by a mod to remove any race or ethnic references was extreme. Shaun agreed to remove an acronym which someone found offensive, but the mod kept going and insisted that other portions of the post be edited. The portions edited were mere statements of fact: Members of a certain ethnic group were behaving in a socially unacceptable manner...no more, no less. In use of an ethnic adjective (not a derogatory term, but the standard Webster's term used to describe person from that specific country), Shaun was stating facts he observed during the course of his work day. Perhaps he was trying to imply something, perhaps not. But you cannot take action based on what you have inferred when reading a post....not without clarification.

Being of Cherokee (Tsalagi is the real name of the nation) I also find "Red Injun" offensive, but also realize it is an old brand name from a bygone era. US advertising is riddled with racial stereotypes - Google some of them...your jaw will drop. Or look at cartoons (Bugs bunny, etc.) from the 1930's - black portrayed with huge lips and all talking like Mammy in "Gone with the Wind." Sure, these are offensive, but they are also history and serve a purpose: how far are we going to go in sterilizing our speech?

The mod then quipping about the Redskins and the Indians was inappropriate....he should take a peek at the docket for the civil courts in those cities: Native American nations have filed suits to try and force the name change. I wonder what the folks in Washington, D.C. would do if the Indian Nations went en masse to the US and filed for redress as victims of state-sponsored genocide? My point is that extremes serve no good purpose.

When I mention I am part Cherokee to people, some one always responds "Oh, like the Jeep?" (Yes, my ancestors had on demand 4 wheel drive and seated 7 comfortably). Do I think GM intended to offend? I doubt it....and in the end, it comes down to intent. To say a word is offensive is a red herring...a word is a word. It is the use and intent that can cause offense. Sadly, many judge others based on shortcomings they find in themselves: "When I use that word, I mean it in an offensive way, so he must mean it that way too."

Another problem we have is the propensity of people being "offended" on other's behalf....in my opinion, this is just self-aggrandizement. I know what does and does not offend me (I was a cop…my skin is like tank armor).

Everyone here could be offended by something --- I have a mentally handicapped brother and niece --- my blood boils everytime someone uses the word "retarded" as an insult or in a joking way --- and I guarantee you that word is used without regard and more often then the others ---

Everyone can be insulted by something and nowhere is it written in stone that kindness or consideration is the only way --- I appreciate it when I get it but anyone wanting and waiting for a fair world we'll live a life of pure misery.

Best to not expect it (politness and consideration) and honor it when it occurs ---- and do your part in being a little higher on the food chain.
