WATCHMEN MOVIE
eh, another magnificent comic book that will no doubt be ruined by hollywood idiots.
It LOOKS awesome, but Jockeys touched on a good point there. For every 10 comicbook movies maybe there are one or two GOOD ones. I never actually read Watchmen though- I think I hated the artwork. Fitting for this movie... :chop:?
when is it coming out? I read it but that was ages ago. I bet this one is pretty good.
I think I read that the group that put together Sin City was putting this movie together too.
I never read it, but my father-in-law is a comic nut and is going crazy over it. I love the preview, though I think the original teaser was best. And might I say, Silk Spectre II is HOT:w
Zach Snyder is the director and he did a bang up job on 300 from whence many key members of the team also hail.
Opens March 6th.
Never read the book. So can't really comment other than to say it looks cool.
see, that's why i'm leery. 300 was a visual tour de force, don't get me wrong, but he added a bunch of extraneous characters and unnecessary plot elements that detracted from the original story, in my mind. he also left out some of the cooler dialogue.
since watchmen is more about dialogue than action (kinda opposite 300) i'm not sure how he's going to handle it. also, they are going to have to wholesale remove big chunks of the storyline or it's going to be a 4 hour movie. they can cut the maritime sub-story without losing too much, and maybe the newspaper stand in general (although some rorshach lines will be lost there) but i still don't think they can manage the whole thing, especially if they do dr manhattan and rorshach's backstories like they did in the book, not to mention all the historic stuff with the comedian.
Speaking of "bang" and "job", here is the best review of 300 I have read so far. Man on Man Action: "It's Spartan hotties versus Persian trannies in Zack Snyder's far-too-faithful Frank Miller adaptation" - Village Voice
Yes, and those all came to your screens courtesy of my fellow countryman Uwe Boll. For which sincere apologies. Too bad the petition to retire did not work. Horrible, horrible stuff.
Saw the trailer last night . . . looks pretty interesting.
I wish it were March already
Xman, and here I was thinking that since you are Canadian, you were talking about the musical group! (yes, my life is a stereo...) :roflmao

I spent an hour this morning trying to find my dog eared copy of watchmen from years ago - I got the trade paperback, but when did that come out - was it earlly nineties? anyhoo, no luck - buried under all the kid stuff somewhere.
I'm pretty sure it was originally out in the 80's actually which is when it is set.
well if it was the 80s, maybe I should just take the position that my old trade paperback is probably unreadable and therefore I need a new one. hmmmmm.
I thought this was a thread on watch collecting. Bummer.
Watchmen was a 12-issue special editon published by DC in 1986 and 87. It's been reprinted many times and I was just recently lucky enough to pick up a hardcover copy at a great price. If you haven't read it, it's well worth the read. And yes, Silk Spectre looks hot in the trailer -- much more so than in the book (although I wish they'd been more faithful to her oh-so-revealing costume as David Gibbons originally drew it.)
I think the casting of Pigpen as Night Owl II is genius!
So my friend and former schoolmate had a minor role in the film and was invited by the cinematographer to an advanced screening. She reports that the film is awesome and she's still trying to process what she has seen. Don't you just hate her?

Anyone hit the midnight show? I'll be going at 10:15pm central tonight. I'll be sure to report back!
I can't wait! I'm considering watching it at one of those Imax cinemas -- are they really worth the hype for non-3D films?
I also came across this the other day. I guess it answers our questions about whether the story within story will be left in or out of the film. Looks like you can buy this now!
Amazon.com : Entertainment : Black Freighter Trailer 3
I'm going to see it Sunday night at the IMAX. I know, how can I wait? Little Man's birthday tomorrow and a million things to do. The suspense is killing me!

Dyiiiiing here! I can't wait to see it. I'm going to hold off until Mon or Tues. to avoid some crowds. I'm thinking it's got to be Imax.
Eh, it's a comic book movie, so no doubt the producers will ruin it, but I'm a consumer whore, so I'll prolly go see it anyway.
The only comic book film I've seen that had any kind of faithfulness to the original comic was The Crow, fifteen years ago.
saw it last night. I thought it was pretty true to the original but at 3 hrs it was a looooooong movie. and the drunks sitting behind us didn't help!!!
I've seen a lot of reviews that rate it a mediocre movie.
With respect, those reviews are manure. Talk about a cinematic adventure! Make sure you pack a picnic for it, because it's extremely long. They changed a little bit of it to make it more movie friendly, but it's overall intact as far as I can tell. My only gripe is the odd soundtrack choices, but extra scenes with SS2 made that all better :D
If you haven't seen this movie, go right away! Don't take the kids though- definitely a rated R movie.
I think these are directly from the graphic novel. Each issue ends with a famous pop quote. I understand they play the entire track of each song.
I'm no fan of adding to this piece unnecessarily. We're changing format to cinema so some changes must be anticipated. Anything that includes more of Akerman and SS2 as a character could be a great choice.

great graphic novel, great movie. shows that any and everyone is capable of the worst to achieve the best.
alright, so i wasn't a fan of 300, or beowulf, or shoot em up, but i really liked sincity. i am somebody who can appreciate cool special effects and crazy graphics, but i need a story line and good actingto keep me watching. i don't want to watch a video game trailer, i want a movie.
so is this worth going to the movies to see this one in my case? i will no doubt watch it eventually, but if it is a good one then i like to see it in the theatre (and there haven't been many good ones lately). and i realize this question is basically impossible to truly answer, but i obviously won't be mad at someone who recommends it if i don't like it. its just that i have never been into comics, so i have no clue about the story line. but the trailer i saw in the theatre that last time i went made it look pretty good.
3 hours though eh? i better go to a nice theatre, with comfy seats.
I don't even know if they were extra scenes, there were just a lot (which is fine).
Chee, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The storyline is surprisingly good, probably because it's not out of the typical comic. It's a grown up story with real plot. The great part is, you don't need to know the back story to enjoy it.
I really enjoyed it. Saw it last night with the SWMBO. I had just recently finished reading the graphic novel, so it all made sense to me, and I knew a lot of what was going on that they could only hint at in the movie. She, not being a fan of extra violence and sex in movies, had a less than awesome time, and felt it got a little slow after 2 hours.
I liked it though, and I think they did a decent job of keeping it fairly true.
I'm going tomorrow morning.
I hit the movie at the midnight showing, and this is coming from someone who watches upwards of 300 movies a year (342 last year to be exact). I thought it was brilliantly done and it needed all of its 3 hours in order to be as true as it was. The graphics were great and the scenes tasteful. I have seen plenty of horrible comic book movies ove the past few year sbut Watchmen is a must see. loved it.
ps. movie reviewers are crap with a holier than thou attitude. they refuse to rate a movie by entertainment value, for the audience it is staged to attract.for exapmple in the comic genra metacritic has the movie 300 at a 51, but the majority of people who saw it (form the propper audience) thought it was a great movie.
the main problem I had is that in the books they made you care about the characters and the people that lived in the US so that when you saw the dead bodies {which you don't in the movie) it hurt. They where so busy trying to advance the story line that they forgot to make us care about anyone in the move. So for me it was true to the story but still failed as a movie. just my 2 cents.
