grumble grumble stupid Political Correctness

I'm thinking that once non-Christians are convinced that all Christmas references don't constitute an effort to negate their traditions, things will calm down. It hasn't always been that way. To this day, there is a lot of effort to cast the U.S. as a Christian nation, which naturally makes non-Christians a bit testy.

As a Marylander, I'd mention (in re: Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer) that we have our own traditional Christmas tune: "I Want Crabs for Christmas." You have to hear it to believe it.

I'd also mention that "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" is entirely the fault of Oklahoma City.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that to most folks, God-fearing or otherwise, Christmas is mostly about presents, family, and eating too much. I'm an atheist and am not offended by Christmas and even observe it, because it's mostly about gluttony and greed, which I'm into.

I find that when I pitch it as Hedonism, folks think it is sophisticated. :rofl2:

I can't decide if I enjoy it more myself or if I enjoy providing all the stuff for others to launch headlong into their own bout of it.

I hear you. But as we've seen, even on these pages, there's nothing that gets people's mojo working quite like a disagreement over religion. We don't see as many closed threads about anything else -- not even politics.

Are you aware that atheists and agnostics commit felony crimes at something like 1/5 the national average? Don't know what to do with that. It's kind of a factoid.

Well, I can understand that. I light up every time I hear "Wake me up before you go-go", because more than any other song it reminds me of a good time for me in the eightees. I have a feeling that history will show Wham to be cheese genius just like ABBA and the BeeGees. They seem cheesey at the time, and they are cheesey, but they endure even better than more classical stuff because genius is genius. My kids now love ABBA and can sing pieces of the songs at the age of 2 and 4..... the beat rolls on.

i reluctantly bought my mom Mama Mia ( i knew she liked it) knowing that if i did, i'd probably have to watch it with her...and i've got dancing queen stuck in my head for thepast 4 days:chop::gaah:
