Gosh, vill der kinder be vearing cute little brown shirts???
Obabma thinking he knows what's best for other peoples children. The word "Offensive" needs to be re-defined for this one. Oh, and it's a mandatory "volunteer" program. They think we are stupid too.
And it's already passed the House. I wish Nov. 2, 2010 would hurry up and get here.
That kind of defeats the purpose of the word "volunteer". It's just compulsory work teams for kids- who gets to decide where these work teams go? On the other hand, what happens when a kid doesn't show up for "work"?
The times they are a changin'. Its turning into a Brave New World out there aint it! Wait until you find out about Obamas domestic Army. Do a search for the campaign speech he gave in Colorado over the 4th of July.
Compulsary volenteerism is great and it will only cast 6 Billion dollars between 2010 and 2014... cheap!
i'm oddly reminded of the shawshank redemption... where the warden takes a payoff to not bid on a contract... all the "volunteers" could be taking paying jobs away from others.
key things (all numbers for 2010-2014)
$600,000,000 to administer the program
$150,000,000 for training and technical assistance
$200,000,000 for "various" demonstration programs
so getting and keeping the program running will be 1/6 of the bill.
so when do the kids start getting asked to spy on their family and neighbors?
OK, I took a deep breath....
I'm hoping my post was just a knee jerk reaction. The measure passed the House 321-105. There MUST be something I don't know (since I admittedly haven't read the bill, yet Search Results - THOMAS (Library of Congress)).
I'm hoping I over reacted.
Ah, but there is such sadness in his humor
I had thought that this was just for the youth but it looks like they want an old-timers program as well...Quote:
H.R. 1388:
Includes among needs to be met under the NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) program, disaster relief, infrastructure improvement, environmental and energy conservation, and urban and rural development.
Requires states to develop comprehensive plans for volunteer and paid service by Baby Boomers and older adults.
"You want that social security check and you medicare? Well then march on down to the NCCC and do your public duty..." slave away until you die of exhaustion! Hooray!:roflmao
i also like amendment 11:
once you serve they will keep tabs on you... maybe some more video surveillance or an RF id chip in each volunteer!Quote:
11. H.AMDT.48 to H.R.1388 Amendment to create a National Service Reserve Corps and requires an annual service requirement of at least 10 hours and/or annual training. A member of the National Service Reserve Corps is one who has completed a term of national service, fulfilled training, and will respond to national disasters and other emergencies. These individuals will be listed in a national database for the ease of immediate deployment in case of emergency.
Sponsor: Rep Titus, Dina [NV-3] (introduced 3/18/2009) Cosponsors (None)
Latest Major Action: 3/18/2009 House amendment agreed to. Status: On agreeing to the Titus amendment (A011) Agreed to by recorded vote: 339 - 93 (Roll no. 138).
In other words, to create those 175,000 "new service opportunities," $6 billion will be re-distributed, thus destroying countless more opportunities elsewhere. Jobs, services, products that will never be realized.Quote:
"...the legislation could cost up to $6 billion over five years and would create 175,000 "new service opportunities" under AmeriCorps."
Progress?
During and right after the elections, I was accused of being a blind Obama fan, who would always defend whatever he was doing. Those who've known me for a while know that this is not true.
But now he has finally done something that gives me the opportunity to prove this in public :)
This is a ridiculous bill (mandatory volunteer service? WTF!?) and I'd fight it every step of the way.
I am all in favor of people doing volunteer work, but making it mandatory is a) missing the point, and b) illegal imo. Now all they need is cirsp uniforms and a powerful insignia.
This is even worse than the mandatory pledge of allegiance.
The article is mis-representing some things:
This is from the article:Quote:
12. H.AMDT.49 to H.R.1388 The amendments prohibits organizations from attempting to influence legislation; organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes; and assist, promote, or deter union organizing.
No mention is made of individual rights in the amendment, just those of the organization. That allows people involved with the organizations to protest or do any of the things they want that are "prohibited" as long as they are acting independently.Quote:
Moreover, an amendment to the bill introduced by Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., one of the bill's 37 co-sponsors in the House, appears to severely restrict the First Amendment by prohibiting the youth participating in the program from attempting to influence legislation, organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts or strikes.
Moreover, the so called Congressional Commission On Civic Service is tasked with discovery not action.

Not to say that that isn't an eyebrow raising concept.

I think if it came to pass that an actual bill was put forth requiring service of any group of individuals, there would be hell to pay and a lot more attention payed too. For now, its good to know who's names are attached to this thing.
I mostly see shoddy internet journalism here. I am not really worried about this particular bill since it doesn't introduce mandates; however, I will keep my eyes peeled for an opportunity to volunteer for a little civil disobedience. :)
