    Default Foley Sound

So I was watching this old Disney film called The Reluctant Dragon. It is set on the Disney lot and has scenes where movies are being made. One scene showed them making sound effects for a cartoon about a train crash and the squeeking wheels on the track, with the brakes locked up, was made by dragging a straight across a pane of glass.

Back in the old days of radio especially AM Radio the sound people would use all kinds of props to make some really inventive sounds. Once FM came into play it didn't work anymore because the sounds on FM sounded phony because of the wider bandwidth. In the old movies in the 1930s and before they did the same thing.

Foley artists are still around and do sounds for movies and tv. Not everyone can afford to hit up George Lucas and ILM for sounds!

Even George Lucas isn't above recycling old sound effects:

The Wilhelm Scream is classic though. Some sounds you just have to use and fit in to your movie.
