My first thought when reading it was " I wonder how different those results would be if taken 50 years ago when American education wasn't nearly as politicized as it is today" Then I thought "What about the average college education and not just one geared towards science" Then I thought why not a poll:). My hope is that everyone who looks at this thread will vote, and vote honestly as I am looking to get an idea of the members here and what roll education and age has played on their outlook, No one needs to post but I will enjoy all responses. If you do post keep in mind this is very unscientific research for my own edification and not intended to be a debate so please keep disagreements with each other to a minimum, meaning state your point of view without arguing with others. I won't stop you if you do though, unless it becomes unruly.

As funny as it is, I think it's an important distinction to make. There are things I'm "conservative" about, such as guns. I feel that as long as I'm a law abiding citizen, I should be able to own pretty much whatever gun I want. And yes, if I can afford a tank, why not (I know someone will bring it up).

But then, there are other areas where I would consider myself to be liberal, such as a form of universal health care. Private healthcare should remain, but in a newer, more streamlined form. I honestly think that we could get a form of worthwhile universal health care that wouldn't cost us much, if any extra. If you've ever actually looked at your hospital or doctor bills, you know that a lot of it is bullsh*t.

I'm a little of both on world issues. I question the effectiveness of the UN and whether we should continue with it. However, I think we should try to be more world friendly (but honestly, I think that's a citizen problem rather than an administration problem). It didn't get anyone anywhere to be entirely isolationist.

I'm in between on government. I'm conservative in that I think it has grown too big for its britches, yet liberal in that I understand we need the government to perform certain services which allow our way of life. Going back to healthcare, it's my opinion that certain government "services" can be scaled back to save money and more than pay for something I would deem more essential, like healthcare.

So yeah, I'm a little of both.

I agree with everything Mr Orange has said

while I fully agree with the Conservative concept of pulling your own bootstraps, I think a nation as developed as ours should guarantee some basic services.

I'm sure we all have a lot of ins and outs on each side. I tend to lean pretty far toward the conservative side, but I'm not a "party line" Republican (although I think the Republican party is actually liberal now), or any other "party". General guideline is I think people should be allowed to do what they want so long as they're not hurting other people. The biggest problem I have is it seems like government (in the US at least) doesn't do anything of value.
Also, the hypocracy of blaming the worlds problems on the "evil rich" people, when members of congress make $250k/year and in most cases were millionaires before even running for congress is tiring. IIRC $250k/year automatically puts you in the top 5% and you lose the claim of being "an average joe".

Any society that aspires to be a great should at least take care of it's citizens basic needs--and health care is a basic need.

I'm very liberal, in the true sense of the word. I think people SHOULD be free to do what they want most of the time. Let them have guns and take drugs and be polygamists. But let them do it in good health, with a fair chance of getting a good meal even if they lost their job and their savings because of corporate malfeasance.

I don't agree with FDR and his Second Bill of Rights, but I feel like something better is almost a birthright for US citizens.

he's explained his views on this in another thread... even though i disagree with him for idealogical reasons, he has a well thought out position and he and the other libertarians here (e.g. me and a few others) have a respectful mutual understanding.

As I have tried to explain before, being a liberal or a conservative, in my view, is a mindset not a party affiliation there are very few conservatives in government yet quite a few Republicans that can't even stand for what they claim to believe in. I do however believe a very large portion of our country (more than half) have a conservative mindset or lean in that direction. Why do I say that? because for the most part, a democrat to be elected he has to tout a more conservative point of view to be elected than what their records would indicate. once elected, all bets are off. you see this with the republicans too.

I agree with you for the most part jockeys. most in government are the same these days. We need to hold everyone of them accountable!
For what its worth Jockeys, I feel the mindset of a libertarian is closer to conservative than liberal based on the viewpoints of libertarians.

my college education was a technical degree and the few liberal classes I took did not seem influential to me

not really. libertarians are very very liberal on social issues, and very very conservative on fiscal issues.

so neither conservative nor liberal. the only guiding principle for the libertarian is that making the gov't bigger or more powerful is ALWAYS a bad thing, and maximizing personal liberty is priority 1.

conservatives traditionally limit personal liberty on social issues (abortion, gay marriage, drug use, etc.) while liberals want to limit your liberty on fiscal issues (socialized healthcare, welfare, etc.)

the libertarian philosophy is that the closer you are to anarchy, the better. neither side seems to understand that. they both want to whittle your freedom away, just in different areas.

Didn't vote in this poll but I'm younger than 40 w/ degree, libertarian. Member of the communist party, registered republican, and voted Obama. Really wanted Ron Paul to be the GOP's nominee.

Yeah, the communist thing was a high school phase. I mentioned it because of my nick -- I'd never actually vote socialist or communist, but I've long been intrigued by the ideal.

Even a staunch Conservative as myself has a few "Liberal" views on certain issues... You just have to decide which of those issues are your personal trigger tripper...

Like for me, my number one issue is gun control if you are anti-gun you don't get my vote period ....

Next issue is the border, don't even talk to me unless closing it is first on your list of solutions...

Health care HA !!!! you have to work around that wording in there that says every "US Citizen" before you even talk to me...

Now on the reverse farther down on my list is say Birth Control/ Abortion, I am quite liberal there but it is not a trigger tripper for me...

So even a conservative can have liberal thoughts, but which are the most important issues to you....

I have allways been amazed that a country as rich as the U.S.A does not have national healthcare.
In Australia our basic health care system (medi-care) is funded by a levy of I think 1.5% of your wages, not quite free but almost, so everyone pays and if you never need to use it you never miss such a small amount out of your weekly wage. Ambulance cover (air and ground) is a very fair $70 a year for a family. You can still have private insurance if you feel the need for a private room or you want want that knee operation done tomorrow not next month.

A bad move our government did was to sell off the utillities to private concerns, I always concidered these utilities (electricity, gas, water) as essential services that should be controlled by government.

We've got the money, we just don't use it accordingly. For instance, our educational system is lacking to say the least. Yet tons and tons of money flows through it to no avail. In my former state, Oklahoma, 36.2% of my vehicle registration fee goes straight to "various school districts", as does a good percentage of the other vehicular taxes. I believe around 60% (or more) of the entire state of Oklahoma's budget goes to education (not even college education). This silly inequity in budgeting is similar in both the state and federal level. I feel that we could do far better money wise in education and still fund healthcare.

I voted to conservative, because the political situation in my Country (Hungary) is really crappy, the liberals (I mean the Party that call himself liberal) just ruined the Capital (the Mayor is a "liberal" since 18 years, and doing such mistakes, the city will collapse in a short time if notthing will change), and they are not politically correct, etc...

Ehhh, i'm not sure what political view i have, but in this situation i'm more conservative, than liberal.
