It isn't often that you get to talk to a sitting president one on one. I'd take the opportunity to tell him exactly what I thought of him and his decisions so far. I only hope that I could do it in such a way as to keep myself from getting killed by the secret service.
I have a feeling that politeness would go a long way with most politician. They get pretty used to people disagreeing with them. Then again, getting "dissappeared" in the White House underground holding cell for a few moths of "enhanced interrogation" doesn't sound like something I want to risk.Quote:

I'm with whoever said Gates should've backed down. Granted, none of us happened to be there, but I've known professors like this guy. There's no reasoning with them, and it seems their sole purpose in life is to prove how right they are, one dickhead moment at a time. What gets me about people like him, educated or otherwise, is how they deal with situations like this. They are confronted with an authority figure who is simply trying to get information, and they can either politely give the information or turn moron and do everything but give the authority figure what they need.
Instead of the situation being over within 5 minutes, and to the satisfaction of everyone involved, it turns into a time consuming ordeal. People get angry and paperwork has to be filled out. All because they couldn't politely hand over their state ID and answer some questions.

The sad thing is, it's bred into academia, and these jackasses are protected. He could get solidly horrible reviews from students every year, and he'd still keep his job. When all those students get poor grades because they disagreed, it hurts them and not the professor. I have more hope for our government to change than academia.
EDIT: I feel I must make a distinction. There do exist a rare breed of academic animal that I enjoy and have friendships with. These few are the ones that I happily call teacher and sometimes friend. These are the people who make a positive difference in student's lives. Their classes are the ones that I and others look back on as being the beneficial classes. If you are a true teacher, thank you.
