So unless we find some way to colonize and spread to other planets like the cancer that we are, my best guess is not a hopeful one for the human race over all.

This is called Malthusian Population Theory- that a population is subject to checks and balances. Well- we got rid of massive wars (the crusades: "John you're my first born, you get my land! James, you're my second born, go fight in the Crusades and die for your country!", WWI and WWII were over 50 years ago), healthcare has extended our age 4 or 5 fold, there's no shortage of food, but let me say this.

Even if we find a way to convert carbon atoms into food (ie not have to grow it), actually let me go further, even if we find a way to change random matter into necessary organic matter, There will be a point where the entire mass of the earth has been consumed and used in human tissue. Obviously, we will die out before then, but to go to the very extreme of things- our growth rate is UNSUSTAINABLE.

What does it matter? We will be dead long before the unsustainability reaches critical mass. And a dead man is dead, no matter how he got that way.

We have had the greatest minds in the Universe working on this very issue. Australians have long pondered this very thing, and we have a working solution to turning inedible charcoal bbq into food - we call it "Tomato Sauce"..... :D

The very fact that we snuff out species just goes to show our superior survival traits. Darwin himself would approve, wouldn't he? Every species we make extint is one less species trying to get our resources, etc. And look at the stats Glenn posted-we're multiplying like crazy. We are the Champions!

Vegemite is still in development- despite their best efforts it remains unpalatable. Marmite and Bovril show promise though.

Actually for some parts of the world, the critical mass will be reached in our generation. Check out the potable water reserves...

Oh I know that, I meant it very literally that We will be dead long before the unsustainability reaches critical mass (for us).

And still, once those populations at risk are dead, why would it matter?
