While I understand the concept, I think it is unrealistic. The only way to enable a small group of militia men to wage war agains the US government itself would be to arm them with all the high end toys that the military has at its disposal.

So that means there are many groups of people with cruise missiles, lots of high explosives, and (why not) nukes and other things.

We've tried that approach in Europe. Lots of independent armies, armed to the teeth, so that noone would invade the others. Guess what: It didn't work.

The only comment I'll make is as far as handguns and these assault type weapons go, here in the U.S there is this paranoia among people who feel they must be armed. To make matters worse all these arguments in favor of ownership and justification are mostly a lot of rubbish, distortions half facts and out and out lies and the gun lobby in the U.S wields incredible political power.

Think granny should carry a gun to shoot her attacker. The only result will be armed criminals who have no hesitation to use violence will instead of pulling a gun on granny and robbing her will instead pull the gun and shoot her dead and then rob her. Criminals ramp up their behavior. They will never stop being criminals and in an armed confrontation with a criminal if you do things legally until you are faced with a weapon you can't use deadly violence so once the guy approaches you and pulls a gun or knife in close quarters if you choose to draw and fire the outcome will probably be a bad one for you.

That would be the kinda of system I would like to see in this country. A strong presance of rifles and shotguns, but focussed toward sport.

It might be worth noting that switzerland does have problems with these weapons.

yes, i do think granny and grandpa should conceal/carry. it is true that a true hardcore criminal will not be stopped because he is going to steal, rob and do just about anything he wants. i had a relative in north carolina attacked in her own home by a home intruder and she had a weapon, in this case she could not get to it, so it did not help. on the other hand conceal/carry does combat some of the little street thugs and wannabe criminals if they think the "old man or woman" is armed to the teeth..
i wish i could find the link to the city in florida where it is mandatory to conceal/carry and the statistics of crime there, maybe someone else can find it and post it here

The statement about the government doing what it thinks best may apply to the UK and Europe. However, the US government will do what its people say is best or all the politicians will pay with their blood. Elected politicians should fear the wrath of the people and do as they are told, not as they "think best".
This idea about the government and its "best for all approach" is trying to be forced on the US people by the current administration. We are not Europe. I hate the federal government, hence when the US does break up again, the states will once again have the power to control their own affairs and let the federal government do what it is supposed to do which is essentially regulate trade and provide national defense. Before to long the administration is going to be burned to the ground and replaced by those who listen if they keep forcing their socialist ideals upon us. Right now its healthcare, next could be disarmament, then taxation into oblivion could easily follow.
As to the purpose of the thread, the Supreme Court in all its righteousness doesn't even defend the constitution. That group ruled in favor of a case where a private developer could petition the local government to take your land and build buildings upon (this occurred in New London, CT by the way) it and give you a crappy price for it. And yet, some people on here fear this group? Are you serious? That was why I said North Carolina should do hat they want and ignore the court since the court has no honor or credibility if they make decisions like they have. They may pass down orders, but the last thing the administration wants to do is use military power to force a state into something. If it were one person, I would say they have to yield, but if the majority of the people of the state agree on the subject, the the Court will brush it aside and move on.
The current administration (according to Gallup) has the lowest approval rate in its fist year since Truman administration.
Let me tell you, they are on their way to greatness!

If there's ever again any warlike crisis to come then the last thing the officials need is half nation running armed to their teeth in the street to 'defend their rights'.

In Finland we have huge amount of guns, but most of these are rifles and of course .22 handguns are for sports. That is a very fun hobby but not suitable for everyone who just wants to play with guns. Automatics are banned from the civilians, because you do not need an automatic for hunting or at the track. I do not know single person who would buy a gun for defence. It is a well proven fact that more there's guns, more they get stolen. Also letting people get guns too easily will sometimes lead into very sad consequences, like school shootings.

Lastly. I have no strong feelings against guns. I have mine and i practice and handle various weapons and systems at my work. Not every day, but enough to say that i know little something about them. I can imagine what damage they can cause when used wrong.
I keep my gun at the safebox at work and wouldn't ever even dream of having guns at home.

ok, so you will let the criminals have free run of you house and family??
i am well armed, in just about every room of my house. some are semi-automatic and can very easily be brought up to full-auto if i so desire. i also have more than enough ammo to hold off for quite a while if the need arises.

What happens if we need to fight the army?

As I read quite a few of these statements made by those from another country, I pose a question to you, but before you answer, read the paragraph below:

I have three safes full of various firearms from single shot rifles, bolt action rifles, semi-automatic rifles, and semi-automatic pistols. Their calibers range from .22lr to 300wsm. I shoot competitively in pistol and rifle in matches, both my wife and myself carry conceiled & we both shoot a minimum of 100 rounds per month with our CCW weapon, no matter the weather. Not all of our weapons are in the safe, nor is my German Shepherd.

With this being said, put your thoughts into a potential criminals mind and think like they would. Would you want to mug, carjack, or invade our home here in the U.S. or your own home in your country? I'm not trying to pick a fight, just think about it.

Bad guys want an easy target, no matter if the bad guy is a man or government.
