I have to say they were both great. Comparing two different captins from different periods of the Star Trek story is like comparing two F1 drivers from different periods. It's like asking who was better, Shuemacher or Fangio.

Ya, that sure is a difficult one. At one time I would have said Shatner but there was lots of new cool stuff in the later one and stuff was added as time went on, I've liked Stewart since I saw him in 'Excalibur', a great actor overall, plus his roll in X-MEN he was perfect for that, and I think that his character as Picard got better. Plus Kirk never was 'assimilated' as part of the Borg, or anything like that I don't think, that was messed up.

I have to quote Jim, the cabbie on "Taxi", when he was asked on his job application if he'd eve had a problem with drug abuse or mental illness: "Hmmm,....difficult choice." I'd have to say...no, on second thought...then again...Oh hell, ask me some other time.

I hate to say it, but Star Trek Next Generation was just bad. I liked it when I was a kid... but it never really satisfied me at the time, I rarely came away feeling like I saw a show I really enjoyed.

    "Captain, they're firing at us!"
    "Hail them!"
    "Captain, they're still firing!"
    "Did you trying hailing them?"
    "Yes, Captain!"
    "Well... I'm out of ideas..."

I have to say, though, Stewart really did carry that show, and make it much better. He really is a excellent actor, much better then Shatner.

But I still think that new Star Trek movie was the best thing to happen to the series since the Wrath of Kahn movie...

IMHO both were good - in very different ways though.

Naturally, given that it was the very first ST series, Shatner broke ground in his role. While perhaps not the greatest actor that ever lived, he also brought a lot of energy and action to the Captain's role.

Stewart, mostly like due to his Shakespearean training/experience, brought a ton of depth and composure to his Captain's role.

I grew up watching Picard, so he'll always win in a comparison for me..!
