To paraphrase a review I saw somewhere, in ten years, when such special effects are the norm, nobody is going to look back at this movie with the affection one might have for Star Wars, or The Matrix, or other groundbreaking special effects movies that do have a good story.
On the other hand, the story is good enough, and the eye-candy is phenomenal. Blew me away in 2-D, can't imagine what the 3-D is like.
I went with my girlfriend and saw it at the IMAX in London, and we both thought it was great!
The storyline is certainly not as poor as the critics would have you believe, in fact I rather enjoyed it.
Its kind of a modern day Pocahontas, where the soldier joins the tribal girl in the forest and she teaches him how the tribe lives and so on. I didnt think it was a bad story line at all.
The effects are awesome and its definately worth seeing in the cinema. It is quite long as well, so make sure you go to the bathroom before it starts...!
I dont think its too long though, and with the 3D you get so into it that you dont notice the length at all.
Absolutely brilliant I thought, and I'd go and see it again in a flash.

It is quite real. The last time I saw a 3D movie was The Creature From the Black Lagoon. They were those old blue/red glasses, but this is substantially different. Very real. The only thing which made it unlike IRL 3D for me is the fact that I was a slave to the camera's focus, I couldn't focus independently on what I wanted to. Well used effect too. Nothing too cheesy like things flying out at you, which only points out the limitations in the effect anyhow, why do that at all?Quote:

the point of Avatar was to be pretty, so the story is pretty safe. Remember that 3D is new, and they had to get people to shell the extra for it. With this people just remember how pretty the movie looks, the guys tell their friends how sweet the effects are, and the girls tell their friends that there was enough love story to be worth seeing. Had they taken a risk, like have the humans leave and then glass the planet from orbit, it would have sunk the boat, and possibly set back the continuation of 3D Movies. Also they are planning on 3D saving the film industry, which is smart, it means that there will be a reason to shell out theater prices to go see films that are going to be different than what you can get at home. They wanna keep they're jobs, they have to change the market model.

Really beautiful work, ground breaking cinamatography, very simplistic story line that actually desends to charicature in some places. Don't expect great art or you will be disapointed. I didn't and I like it a lot.
well i am now pumped to see it and yet i will probably wait as i don't have an Imax anywhere near me so my 37 inch screen at home will do just fine. plus my local cinema 6 is really uncomfortable so to sit for 3 hours is just wrong. the closest alternative is an hour away so waiting seems inevitable.
its a shame too as i have never been to an Imax nor seen a movie in 3D.
My Partner and I saw it in 3D, for once a sci fi with really well defined characters, not just rely on special effects. Will stand watching again. Really enjoyed it.

I don't watch movies often at all, but this was a good flic and I do like sci-fi fantasy type stuff.
