Hitler did, for starters. Pretty much by the book (or, rather, books, "Mein Kampf" and "Das zweite Buch"). I'm quite certain the same could be said about most totalitarian dictators (cf the blithe idea about the dogs of the bourgeoisie at the core of the Socialist pagan religion and the countless millions of deaths it brought).

I have always found that both views, ie belief and disbelief in politicians's complete fulfilment of promises made before an election, are a sure sign of that person's not having understood how a liberal democracy works. Which is fine if you live in a mud hut in the wilderness, but can be quite embarrassing in the presence of people who have.

PS Nice speech, by the way.

I don't have a problem with much of what he says; it is much of what he has and hasn't done that troubles me. He is a wordsmith and though his eloquent words can be moving, some of his actions have been devastating.

With that said Jimmy, despite a lot of question on the President's agenda and his service, (I like that service), to our country/people; I do not appreciate blanket opposition...it serves no purpose and discredits those participating.

I'm certainly with you on hope and unity. As most of us want and need pretty much the same thing, if they truly occupied themselves serving our interests, for the most part, they would be acting in unity.

So I am not very political in fact I really don't care about any of it but I had nothing else to watch so I was watching the SotU last night and I have to say I was really impressed with how impressive it was. Obama has an amazing silver tongue. Probably didnt add much to this thread but I wanted to say I had seen it.

I didnt find much humor in his post, so I dont know where the jester part comes from. Infact, his post scared the shit out of me if I do say so.
I only got to listen to a little bit of Obama's speech cause I was traveling and the radio stations kept fading out, what I did hear though made me laugh. He said we were going to freeze spending in 2011, spending is already the highest its ever been( higher than all presidencies to date, combined) so I really dont see the benifit of freezing it, and it was a bit curious, imo, that the spending freeze was right before the next major election. . Then when he said he doesnt like to place blame but we have had to take drastic measures to recover from the last eight years. One thing I have learned with this president is you dont pay attention to what he is saying, as much as you should pay attention to what he is doing. For example the day that the biggest spending bill in history was passed, he made a speech about responsible spending. Then the day he made cuts to the military, he made a speech about the importance of national security. This would have been the funniest speech in history, atleast the most hippocritical, if it wasnt so scary.

I thought it was a good speech. Aside from how it was delivered I think it's at least promising that he specifically addressed many of his administration's criticisms. He was just short of saying, "...and for all my opponents on SRP, I'm going to work on small speeches without the aid of teleprompters." :)

I support him on these forums not only because he was the first democrat I ever voted for, but because I believed that even after a year things wouldn't be drastically different. Hell, I've only been straight shaving for about a year and I'm just starting to get the hang of that.

The earliest hard deadline I heard that we can hold him to was having our troops home from Iraq by the end of August. No delays and no sneaky just-move-them-to-Afghanistan to say you met the deadline. He also asked for a new jobs bill immediately and I'm interested to see if anything actually comes out of that.

Let's see. He threw the legislators under the bus by saying he didn't have anything to do with the "back room deals"...yea, right. He blamed the Republicans for not "working with us" yet the closed door meetings continue and everyone that has picked up a paper or watched the boob tube knows they tried to sneak everything through.

Last night I honestly think we saw the destruction of his presidency, if he does not change course. He just does not get it! We the people have spoken and the response by the Democrats was to hurry a vote through so the legislators could not go home and hear what the people had to say about all the bribes, extortion, and lying that went on. Don't repeat what happened the last time they let everyone go home for the Thanksgiving break.

I don't care who gets it done but for over a decade the American people want just a couple of things from the government.

1. Secure the border. 78% of the people want it.
2. Health care reform which includes tort reform. 70% of the people want it.
3. Quit spending so much money on BS, we threw out the last bums for spending like a bunch of crack heads.
4. Pass laws based on real science not "I feel" science. A recent poll says that 70% of the people want that also.

I agree with a lot of that, but could you clarify what you mean in #4, please?

What I found so arrogant in his speech last night was his "with all due respect for the separation of powers in the branches of government, you, the Supreme Court of the US, are a bunch of Morons."

Now that is not a direct quote, but a very good paraphrase. Clearly, that's not the only thing I found arrogant about the speech last night, but it definitely tops the list.
