The word "basically" really irritates me. For me, this began in 10th grade when my AP US History teacher shared with us words and phrases that bothered him. Some I agreed with, others I did not. I agreed, and still agree, with his dislike of the word basically. If you are going to say basically, it should be followed by a complete, concise description. But I'm not sure that a description can be complete and concise, and I find that people often begin long winded rants with the word "basically." If they were to eliminate the word "basically," I would have one less word and one less contradiction to listen to.
"Time period" also rubs me the wrong way, because it is redundant. (In case you didn't guess, this was also brought to my attention by my AP US teacher.)
I was about to go on somewhat unrelated rant, so I'll cut it off there.
I realize Jockeys already mentioned the word "paradigm", but the overuse/misuse of that word has caused me to quit listening whenever I hear it.
