Wow I think that might just work or maybe even lets get rid of the real leech the IRS and just increase the sales tax on everything... No more income tax you just get taxed on what you consume, whoops that is way to simple it won't work...

The problem is that a straight sales tax is a disproportionately unfair burden on the poorer among us. That's why The Fair Tax is a "better", more equitable way to incorporate your ideals

Unfortunately, that's just about inevitable. I'm not worried about paying my fair share.... but carry the brunt? Not a chance.

Here's my take:

My American dream is to give my family the best I can, to leave a bucket of cash so my grandkids can live fat, and chip in to the big pot so our rights are protected. I conveniently left everyone else out of my dream. Screw some stranger's financial woes. If you can't pay the bills get your ish together.

I'm not sure it would be "unfair" The poorer tend to buy cheaper things in general so would pay less tax per item as well as buying fewer items. Really it is up to each consumer how much tax they would be willing to pay.

How should citizens pay their taxes if not in a tiered system? I would love to see realistic proposals to replace federal income tax with sales tax. Instead of receiving tax based on what the citizens earn, the government would receive tax based on what they spend.

Honestly, those dollars you have in the bank are property of the government as well. And since the government is evil and untrustworthy you should just send me those filthy Federal Reserve Notes. :)

Not true. Even the creators of the Fair Tax go into great detail explaining why this is inaccurate. There are two books that I've read on the subject, and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in such stuff.

I'm assuming you realize that I said distribution and not REdistribution. Words mean things, my friend ;)

The very last thing that I'm ever going to do is advocate redistribution of wealth. However, for me, I can get to a point where I take less money for work so others can make more. In fact, I've done it. What I was talking about is people considering the greater good instead of just being an I-me person.

So it's okay for you to do more work to take the financial burden off of your family, but it's not okay for our government to do more work to take the financial burden off its citizens?

I hope you live out that dream and that everybody in your family lives happily ever after. I'm sure there are lazy bums waiting in line for their free handouts who, at one time, had the same dream as you.

When just 20% control 93% of the wealth well...there is a growing risk that the 80% will grab pitch forks and give those 20% folks a good butt forking. The progressive tax system may or may not be fair, but it balances the political side of the equation so that the pitch forks remain in the barn.
