    Default Apocolypse, PA

Have any of you seen the new show, Apocolypse, PA, on the history channel yet? I came across it last night and would have to say it is one of my favortite shows. It revolves around a family of four, whose father decides he is sick of being so dependent on society and wants his family to be as independent as possible. So far they have converted a truck to run on horse manure or wood chips, bought some goats for milk, made a still, made their own cornmeal for said still, made black powder, made their own shot for their black powder pistols. I keep waiting for them to switch to straight razors as I think it would fit the theme of the show quite well. If your into this sort of thing and havent seen it check it out.

So what's he gonna do when one of his family members becomes sick, very sick?

enroll in med school, of course. then build a pharmaceutical lab to synthesize the needed drugs and it'll all be happily resolved within 3-4 episodes.

or may be the writers of the show just ditch that whole getting terribly sick episode in favor of getting quite sick, but not enough that it wouldn't be cured by the right herbs/roots/manure mix.

Obviously you guys missed this bit?

It's impossible to be COMPLETELY independent....AND take good care of your family.

I haven't seen the show as i do not watch TV, but usually these kind of stories might be entertaining fairytales, but far from the real world.
It is impossible to turn back the time and go back to the 'good old days' which, in fact, were not so good.

It depends on your definition of 'good ole days' there are some people who besides medical care do live pretty much off the land without the need of many of the modern technologies including electricity.

That is the point. I'm not saying that our modern society is the best there could be, but honestly changes to live longer these days are much higher that say 50 years ago. At least here.
Of course there are many more improvements than medical care only. Living off the land will surely work for some, but the same percentage of people that did so 50 years ago, couldn't no longer make their living that way.

Most people who long for the "good old days" are either very young or very foolish. If society had somehow just stop progressing say around 1860 or so the fact is just considering medicine alone very few of us would be here today having either died in childhood of disease or accidents or our ancestors would have died. Even if we were born and survived to adulthood just think how many's lives have continued because of medical intervention.
