All the good si-fi's are going or gone.

As you can tell by the title I'm a huge si-fi fan. I just learned of the canncelation of Stargate Universe. Although they spent way to much time on character development it was a pretty good show.:cry:
Heroes was cannnceled. So no season5. I guess it was just getting to compicated for some.
Defying Gravity had the potential to be a really good show but was canceled after a single season(only aired 8 of 13 episodes in the US):banghead:
And well I'm at it I'll complain about a oldy but a goody FireFly the one season and the movie they did were great. Nothing is better than a si-fi western comedy (this is really a must see).

Things to look forward to is AMC's The Walking Dead, and Fringe.
I'm sure I'm missing some good ones but this is all I can think of at the moment.

Is there any other si-fi's that I should be watching?

Some good stuff on the BBC. The new Doctor Who and Torchwood (a Doctor Who spinoff) are both awesome shows.

Yeah I've seen a few episodes but I imagine I should get my hands on the first seasons and watch them in order.

I agree with you list of good shows. My question is this, when did fake wrestling become Syfi??

Well the newest Doctor Who iteration started in '05 -- it goes back way further and I remember seeing a few episodes when I was little, but the new series really has me (and my wife!) hooked. If you want to sample a great stand-alone episode, look for the one titled Blink.

Did you watch the new Battlestar Galactica? Another good reboot but that ended a few years ago. There was a BSG spinoff called Caprica which aired last year, but I didn't catch it.

That's really about it for modern sci-fi TV that I watch.

Battlestar Galactica (the latest version) was great bought the all the seasons on DVD.
I did watch the first season of Caprica but wasn't a big fan of it. Maybe I should give the second season a chance.

I sure wish they would bring Firefly back.. it was so good my wife even liked it and she doesn't care for sci-fi. I really liked Caprica as well and never got to see the Battlestar Galactica series. Unfortunately my channel selection no longer includes the SciFi channel. I did hear Warehouse 13 was decent but haven't seen it.

As far as Dr. Who I enjoyed the series back in the 80's but it does date back to the 60's. I like the new iteration as well but not quite as well as the older ones.

From the Sci-Fi ones I like
Warehouse 13, Eureka, Sanctuary- this one is actually very good IMO.
On ABC one can watch "V" it is IMO pretty good.
I hope Fringe will keep going for a few more seasons at least.

Tonight on Sci-Fi a new series starts- "Being Human" it looks interesting.
On HBO one can catch "True Blood", that one is awesome.

Being Human is a re-boot of a british version that was on up here in Canada not that long ago.

A HUGE +1 to The walking Dead, it has been a great series so far, and very true to the Graphic Novels.

Also in terms of sci-fi movies, Battle LA looks promising and SUPER 8 also looks good.

It has always amazed me how studios are willing to spend incredible amounts of money on a movie or TV show to have it bomb. Unfortunately, there is a real issue with good writing. At one time it was all about the story and writing which has taken a back seat to all the special effects and gee whiz stuff.

There is just no substitute for good writing and it's in very short supply these days.

I cant agree more with u, there is no real original Movies/shows anymore with a few exceptions, everything has either being remade, or taken from a book. Thats why I enjoy directors like Christopher Nolan for creating excellent ORIGINAL movies like Inception and Memento, rather then the Michael Bays of the world

"Falling Skies" is coming to TNT, produced by Mark Verheiden (BSG, Timecop, My Name is Bruce) and exec produced by Spielberg. I'm hopeful.

US remakes of foreign shows rarely work. Too much is lost in translation. Kath & Kim was hysterical when it aired in Oz. Here, it sucked ass. life on Mars may have been a rare exception. I can't imagine what Hollyweird would do to Torchwood or Dr. Who....

Dead Like Me is the one I miss. The creator has had some bad luck recently. His other new show Pushing Daises also bit the dust after two years. Good writing and good casting.

Being canceled isn't always indicative of quality in the US. See: Freaks & Geeks / Undeclared, Firefly, Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, Pushing Daisies. Jericho was also canceled despite good reviews, although I never watched that series.

That's part of what makes Doctor Who so appealing to me; the writing is great and maintains continuity, the actors actually act, and the effects are subtle, not gratuitous.

I agree completely. About quality. I just meant that no new Caprica would be coming.

I still watch Firefly once a year.

Well watching the re-boot of Being Human now. We will see how it goes.
I don't know about everyone else but I usually watch a new show when it is released on DVD. I don't like being tyed to the TV. When I have time I'll watch.
You guys are completely correct about the lack of original programming. Most of the story's told have been told a hundred times before (example: Avatar. Great eye candy but more of the same old crap)

If I see one more great BBC show vomited back on us by an American studio I think I will stop watching American TV altogether.

You should read more books. If you love Science Fiction....then the TV shows aren't half as good as most books that are out.

But yeah, not too many science fiction quality. Although I have to say that I liked Heroes...it was mainly the first two seasons that were good. After that it all went downhill.

Most other series come across as too cheap for me though.

As far a si-fi books I read a lot of them. I'm now into the Warhammer 40k Horus Heresy series. I'm on book 15 Prospero Burns. Great series of books base on the history of the table top strategy game that I use to play as younger man.

Another factor is that modern shows are made differently than the old. Really old stuff was done live and even when they started using film and tape they rehearsed shows before actually doing them. These days they just shoot and redo scenes which is much cheaper and the quality often shows.

One of the thing that first interested me in vintage shaving methods was the DE shaving depicted in Battlestar Galactica. (It was DEs the Admiral used, right?) He cut himself at least twice, wincing visibly. I thought, "Wonder if I could shave that way." I found SRP eventually and registered. Finally, I decided to go with the Feather--ouch! Very painful. Now I'm a straight shaver and loving that.

Unfortunately I no longer have TV.Everything I watch is Hulu or You tube.Firefly was a favorite though and I keep praying that God and Joss Whedon will somehow bring it back heh.

Dissapointing that they cancelled Heroes, I thought it was brilliant. They did pretty much kill it over here when they moved it to like 10pm on a Sunday, hardly going to be pulling big figures with that.

I've got fringe to watch. It's not sci-fi but Supernatural is probably one of the series that has impressed me most in terms of writing, it's clever and not scared to have a laugh at it's self.

That's really cool. I'm working my way through the Space Marine omnibusses/Omnibussi(?) right now. Read the Ultramarines and the Blood Ravens so far. Once I'm done with all the Space Marine chapters I'll probably get started on the Horus Heresy. They're written a lot better than I expected.

Well, if you want to go in the opposite direction, and dig up old shows, Farscape and Lexx were pretty much my two favorite Sci-fi shows.

Farscape was the closest thing to the original Star Trek Ive seen. Not really b/c of the plot of the show, but because the characters were all appealing and likable, and the plots imaginative. Lexx was something... completely different, and somewhat insane. Great show, though.

But to get on topic, Fringe is the only Good Sci-fi on now that I'm aware of. Ironically, I happened to see the season two finale, and that got me into it, even though I knew about half the plot spoilers when I got the first two seasons. I was actually kind of amazed with what the show was about and it being on mainstream TV.

Oh, believe it or not, Supernatural actually is a pretty good show, though its not sci-fi, obviously. I know it doesnt seem like it would be any good, being on the teen girl network and all, but its entertaining and not pretentious at all.

I'm quite surprised that you say it's aired on a teen girl network, it's quite dark. It's not sci-fi but it does tend to deal with similar themes as a lot of sci-fi, just from a different perspective.

I stormed through the first season of Fringe, thought it was good!

Fringe gets really good during the second season when they start to explain whats going on. It isnt an endless bunch of red herrings, like something like the X files turned out to be.

You can sort of tell Supernatural is a WB show because they occasionally have those awful conversations about their feelings, that seem awkward and tacked on, IMO. But fortunately they're rare, and most TVs have a mute button...

So I thought I would mention that I've been watching the re-boot of Being Human, and I'm kinda digging it. The uk version was kinda bad.

i myself like firefly, wish they could have kept it around, when i came to reading sci-fi, i could only read dune, actually that is the only scifi i will still read, never could get into much other.
