I was there too, I was in the first layoff wave at Sun Microsystems right after 9/11 and the dot com crash. It was brutal. It all worked out in the end though. Good luck!

Worst comes to worst you can always come over here! :)
Hi Gary ,sorry to hear of your problem,It is definitely not a nice feeling, particularly if you have responsibilities , mortgage and a wife and kids to run, people get used with their lot and when change is pushed on them they feel mighty uncomfortable The same happened to me 20 yrs ago after a work accident. Their idea of rehab was to sack you, just when I had a young family and mortgage,I not winging, what I am saying things always seem to work out, best of luck with looking
Kind regards Peter
My prayers go out for you gary. I hope you have better success finding something than I have. Self employment is not the way to go unless you have a nice cushion already set up to weather the tough times.
Thanks All,
I do have a mortgage, 2 kids etc etc..so I'm not entirely comfortable, there again I have enough equity in the house to sell and buy something "that needs a bit of work" and be mortgage free. It's always an option.
Often the standards we live to and their associated trappings are self imposed, we want flash cars, the latest TV's etc we pay the price I guess.
Gary
Gary, If you think you can sell your home and buy something without a payment that would definitely be the way to go and sooner than later.
I could really kick myself for not setting things up that way when I had the chance last time. I had the means to buy really nice property and set up the home so that when it was done it would have made a disgustingly huge profit. Instead I went for the finished home with the all cherry wood kitchen, manicured lawn, etc. After corporate downsizing ruined property values where I ended up buying, by the time I sold the home we lost over 30 grand and barely paid off the mortgage, etc.
Just my 2 cents but hey, if you can do it and the family will tolerate it I'd say go for it with gusto man. Debt free and owning a home is so much nicer than flat busted and living in someone else's home.
Well I've got an Australian company that want a guy to run New Zealand.
They are flying me to Melbourne this week for final interview..so all might not be lost.
Fingers crossed.
Gary
If I see a guy with a really well shaved face walking down the street I'll say g'day!
All the best for the interview, hope it goes well!
