    Default Travel Question - Istanbul

    My wife and I are planning a trip for June of this year. Our ultimate destination is Italy, but we are looking at making a stop in Istanbul on the way. Neither the wife or I have ever been to either Turkey or Italy. I'd love any input/advise any members can offer for either...

    Can't help you with Istanbul, but whereabouts in Italy do you plan on visiting? We did a trip to Rome, Florence and Venice a few years ago and it was amazing.

    Do it! Istambul is amazing-- I think it's the most polar opposite to American culture that you can get, as far as modern industrialized cities go. The food is amazing, and I found the culture very intriguing-- and don't even get me started on the Turkish baths

    I visited Istanbul once and it was definitely worth it. The old city, palaces, museums, mosques... I went for a 4 day trip at the time which was really sufficient for me to see the history of Istanbul.

    Agreed! Istanbul is a must if you can wing it!

    In one day (starting early) you should be able to see Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque, and The Grand Bazaar. If you have an extra day, Topkapi palace is quite a sight too.

    Food is great there and if you happen to be there for an evening, don't miss out on nargile (water pipes) and proper Turkish Delight (lokum).

    That's pretty much our itinerary in Italy. We're looking at 2 days in Rome, 4 days in Florence/Tuscany and 2 days in Venice...
