Precisely. One rock and smother it with scotch so it just cools it slightly without geting too watery.

I've often wondered if I should keep my scotch in the freezer for just this reason. I like it cool, but don't want to let it get wattered down. I like my vodka and gin there. Would it be blasphemous to put the scotch beside them?

I'm firmly in the "no water in my scotch" camp but I've been told on good authority by serious scotch aficionados that one small teaspon of water added to your scotch opens up the nose tremendously and it's a sin to drink it without doing it.

I'm going to try it side by side and see if I can tell the difference... but I've heard it from a LOT of people so I don't think it's a wive's tale.

That is true, it tastes better. Spring water is fine. But I like my malts warm as a cognac...

I would say so - you'll kill all the flavour by drinking it cold. A wee splash of cold water cools it enough for me. I've got a few cask strength whiskies (55% ABV or so) and a bit of water certainly helps bring out the taste.
