Tennessee info

I have a very tentative line on a job in Nashville, I'll be starting to interview for soon (I just finished up two screening interviews and passed with flying colors). The job sounds right up my alley, although it obviously pays less than I get in the bay area :)

If I end up relocating to nashville what can I expect? Anyone give me any opinions who might know the area? I looked a bit at real estate prices and I used to live in TN a long time ago (I was in the 4th grade so my memories aren't too detailed about it). I am not putting the cart before the horse here, I just don't want to start interviewing seriously with these folks unless I'm personally prepared to relocate should things go well. Don't want to waste anyone's time.

Opinions? Climate? Culture? Cost of living? General demeanor of the people? We'd probably want to buy a little bit of acreage and wouldn't live in Nashville proper. We're really looking to slow down our pace of life. We're almost hippies already, at least we try to live a fairly slow pace as much as we can out here and we're really interested in slowing down and smelling the roses.

Real hot in the summer, very hummid. Great people very friendly in the right areas, great music fun town. The city of nashville the touristy areas at least are very clean. You can get great land near the city without actually having to be in it. Memphis is a whole other story though lol!

and of course the music is excellent!

I live in alabama all my life but when I have been to or through TN I thought it was a beautiful place. Cost of living should be much less than CA. Being a southern state and also just depending on where you are people can be friendly. I think they get snow there also. I am in Birmingham Al and we can sometimes get it so I think TN has more of a chance to get it depending on where you are. Like JL said it will be hot and humid at times. If you want a slower pace in life I think you couldn't go wrong living in TN. I wish I knew alot more specific stuff about TN but never spent much time there but I think you would like it if you want some land and to slow things down.

Cost of living is much less than the west coast, and the lifestyle is a bit different, too.

It does get hot in the summer, and cool in the winter, but it is a pleasant climate overall. Nashville is right on the CumberlaNd River, and there are several large lakes nearby.

A pleasant place to live, with very friendly people, lots of good food, and a good nightlife downtown. It's not LA, but it is a nice laid back city.

As a former Tennessee resident, I can say that Nashville is a very nice area. If you're going to buy a house, you can get much more house (and land) for what you'd pay in San Jose. Also, there is no State income tax in Tennessee, so that's worth almost 10% right there. Gasoline is cheaper, food is cheaper, insurance is cheaper. If you go outside of town, you can be in the country in minutes. If you like hunting and fishing and the outdoors, it's a great place to live. It's a pretty *young* town with Vanderbilt University and the country music scene, and it's large enough to have lots of stuff to do. The weather is fairly mild in the winter and it usually doesn't get below freezing very often. Summers are hot and humid but that's pretty standard for the south. I suggest you go visit there if you're serious about moving there.

Slowing down and smelling the roses is great ,just as long there aint too much fertalizer around them lol
seriously ,best of luck, I got out of the city about ten yrs ago with the family, it is not an easy thing to do, I would never go back

Or stop through new mexico on the way. I personally like idaho quite a bit, but the wife would never let me move that far west.

I headed down to Tennessee a couple of summers ago with a buddy for a music festival. It was more his scene than it was mine, but I ended up having a good time. I discovered Doc Watson while I was there, and saw him perform under a tent during an evening rain storm. That was cool.

We toured around Nashville, too. That was fun. The main strip was nothing but music. Country bands in every window.

We almost got arrested on the way back, after crossing into Kentucky.

Here's the story. Quite long, so skip it if you're not interested! :D (By the way, my friend was the only guy who indulged in drugs that weekend. I stuck to the beer, but embelished the story a little ;) )


I awoke to the sound of gravel crunching underneath the wheels of the Tercel. We had stopped on the shoulder of the road. "Oh fuck," said Jesse, stuffing his rolling papers underneath the seat, and out of sight. "What's goin' on?" I asked him, rubbing my eyes. He was squirming behind the wheel and didn't answer - but I managed to figure things out on my own, when I noticed the pulsing red and blue lights in my side-view mirror. "Oh fuck," I said.

It was summer, and we had just spent the past four days camping out on a large patch of Tennessee farmland with about two-hundred thousand twenty-first century "hippies."
Jesse's Toyota didn't exactly blend in with the old, rusted Volkswagen vans everyone else seemed to be driving, but we didn't care.
We didn't travel to Bonnaroo all the way from Canada to make friends with a bunch of stereotypes - we were there for the music, which included the likes of Bob Dylan, The Dead, The Dave Matthews band, and any number of lesser-known blues, country, and folk artists. That's why we were there.

And then of course there were the drugs.

The campground at Bonnaroo was absolutely teeming with chemicals. It reminded me of a hive, and the drones were steadily swarming in from the nearby freeway, each carrying his or her own personal nectar.
Jesse and I had stocked the coolers in the back seat with a good quanity of beer, but it quickly became apparent that if we wanted anything else -- anything at all -- we could get it. Within literally five minutes of parking the car in the not-yet-flattened grass, I was offered pot, mushrooms, acid, cocaine, ecstasy, morphine pills, heroin, and peyote.
My friend and I were young, and nearly a world away from home -- we felt as though we were on the first page of one of those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books.

"Just stay calm," I told Jesse between deep breaths, looking at the highway patrol officer in his cruiser behind us. "If we stay calm, we'll be fine."

It was a little after one in the morning and we had just crossed into the state of Kentucky. The festival was about an hour and a half behind us and we were on our way home. We were unshaven, dirty, smelly, and absolutely exhausted after having spent the past few days indulging in numerous substances, while wandering about listening to loud music under the sun's intense rays. Had we been stopped on the way down, we likely wouldn't have been as worried as we were at that moment. But because our brains were pretty fried, and we weren't entirely sure if we had anything illegal in the vehicle or not, our hearts were pounding hard.

Jesse rolled the driver's side window down as the trooper approached the vehicle, his boots clicking on the asphalt. We each tried to catch a glimpse of him in the side-view mirror as he came closer, but we were forced squint because the trooper shone the beam of his flashlight into our eyes using the reflection.

"How y'all doin' tonight?" the the officer asked, not expecting an answer. "Lah-cence and registration please," he continued, still shining his light in Jesse's face. After checking out his identification, he handed it back to him and politely asked Jesse if he would follow him to the back of the v-hickle.
"I just thought I'd show you why I pulled y'all over," the trooper said as he led him back. I rolled my window down an inch so I could listen in.

The cop then proceeded to explain that in all his years of law-enforcement he had never seen a licence plate that looked quite like the Tercel's, which had been almost entirely eaten away by rust.
"I mean, I couldn't even tell where y'all were from!" I heard the officer laugh.

Jesse forced a chuckle and nervously explained that during the winters in Ontario there was often a lot of salt on the roads, which accounted for the erosion. "I've been meaning to get it replaced, though," he added, undoubtedly hoping that this would be the final word of the evening.

But the trooper obviously didn't have to show Jesse his own licence plate; I understood immediately that he had separated the two of us in the hopes we would contradict one another's stories. This was the old divide and question technique. And, just as I predicted, the trooper then immediately got down to the serious business.

"Now, where are y'all comin' from?" he asked.
"We were just at the Bonnaroo festival," I heard Jesse say. "On our way home to Canada, now."
"That's a mighty long drive," the trooper said. "Did y'all enjoy yourselves down here?"
"Yeah--yeah, we had a good time."

Quit beating around the bush, I thought, tapping my foot impatiently.

"Now, I've got to ask you this," the officer said sternly. "Do you have any illegal substances in the v-hickle this evening?" I held my breath as Jesse paused a moment.
"No, we don't," he eventually stated. "Well, I can't say for certain whether or not James up there has anything on him, but I know that I don't have anything."
"You're sure, now?" rejoined the officer. "'Cause I've got a drug dog in the cruiser back there, and he can sniff out narcotics a heckuvalot better than I can -- even the tiniest ammount. So if you've got anything to tell me, now's the time."

Jesse paused again at this. "Well," he began, "there is a pair of manicure scissors in the glove compartment that we used to cut up some weed a few days ago. I guess those could have traces of marijuana on them."
The trooper said that he wasn't concerned with things like that. What he wanted to know is whether we had any substantial ammount of drugs.
"In that case, no," said my nervous friend.
"Okay, you wait here while I go talk to your buddy," the trooper said as he made his way to my passenger side window.

I then proceeded to repeat what I had heard Jesse say, word for word, about the scissors. I added that we did have a small bit of pot before we left the concert grounds, but we decided it was best not to drive on the roads with it, and gave it a couple of hippies -- much to their delight.

The trooper then gave me the same "now's the time to tell me" routine, which made me pause and think. I quickly realized, though, that any hesitation at this point would almost certainly look suspicious, and since I didn't want to risk having that drug dog poking around, like Jesse, I said that there were no drugs in the car.

The trooper, hunched over, stared hard into my eyes, attempting to read my thoughts. He then stood up straight, glanced back at Jesse and said, "Well, I believe you boys, and I'm gonna let you be on your way. You've got a long drive ahead of you, so you may want to get some coffee at the rest area around the corner."
We both muttered our thanks and told the officer we would take his advice as he walked back to his cruiser. "Y'all drive safe, " he said as he shut his door.

The two of us sat silently in the car until the trooper had driven off. "Holy shit, was I worried!" Jesse eventually said. "Oh, me too," I agreed. "Hey, let's head to that rest area he was talking about - I could go for a coffee."

Jesse then put the car into gear and accelerated down the road. A moment or two later he turned and looked at me, his mouth half open. "Holy shit," he said.

"What?" I asked.

"HOLY SHIT!"

"What! What is it?"

"Man, I totally forgot about that loaf of pot bread I bought!"
"Oh my god."

With our eyes widened, we both turned and looked in the back seat.

Sure enough, there it was, in plain view - the greasy, marijuana-packed loaf Jesse had shelled out a fair bit of cash for two days earlier. Its potency had been verified, since he had eaten a small piece of it on the day he bought it and been stoned for hours.

The amazing thing was, had we not genuinely forgot that there was a goddamn brick of drugs in the back seat, we wouldn't have known what to do! When asked the "are you sure?" question, we'd have likely stammered like an idiots, while sweating profusely. At that point the dog would have been summoned, half-crazed, the scent of drugs in its nose. He'd have located the bread instantly and Jesse and I would have been hauled off to a Kentucky prison, and given the opportunity to call our parents. "Hey, we were arrested in Kentucky - can you drive the 19 hours it takes to get down here and bail us out?"

As we pulled into the rest stop to get our coffee, we immediately tossed the pot bread into the garbage. We then sped off into the darkness, talking at length at how incredibly lucky we had been.

Wow, well-written! I actually had something similar happen to me a couple of years back. Went on a run to the local dealer's to supply a few people in the residence with some uhmmmmm "tea". Since we were all smalltimers, I had about 10-15 dime bags full of "tea" (mint tea for all of you Ontario law enforcemement and RCMP officers) in my glove compartment when I got pulled over for running a red.
Now, I wasn't inebriated and I didn't actually run the red. The light turned yellow as I was in the middle of the intersection but the good constable was in a bad mood and wanted to take it out on someone.
Without thinking I reached into the glove compartment for my license and registration. When I realized what I was doing, I kept praying that he wasn't going to take too close of a look and that I won't have any dime bags spilling out of the glove compartment. Cops don't like tea :D Fortunately nothing came out and all I got that night was a poorly written ticket for running a red that my paralegal got dismissed lol.

You are a heck of a story teller. Like a page out of a book.

That is one of the reasons I never messed around with drugs because I was always to afraid of being caught.

Well, just to put paid to this thread I backed out of the job after the initial interviews. The hiring manager didn't impress me at all with his level of professionalism, the way he structured his team, or the way he handled deadlines. I should've known it wouldn't work out when I moved everything off my schedule to call him in the evening at a time he designated, got blown off and forwarded to voicemail, and then he returned my phone call at 5:45 am the next day waking me out of a dead sleep.

In addition he's deliberately understaffing his teams and running the projects on scheduled "crunch time" (for anyone who's familiar with the programming industry). He also wasn't too keen on me taking time off for a honeymoon either. I'm 40 years old, I have 14 years of experience and multiple languages under my belt, two software patents and I don't have to do non stop 80 hour work weeks anymore. Looks like I won't be moving to Nashville just yet :)

And FWIW, all the entertaining drug-addled mispent youth stories notwithstanding, I don't have any sympathy at all for people who shoot up, smoke, or otherwise consume uncontrolled pharmaceuticals and then get busted by the po po. I've never done them, have no interest in them, and don't think being a druggie is something to be bandied about like a badge of honor. I'd beat the everliving crap out of my kids if I caught them doing dope (probably a good thing I don't have kids) just like my parents threatened to do to me if they caught *me* doing it... and I knew they weren't kidding either. They did a damned fine job of raising me, but I know if I would've got a dope habit they'd have taken me right out and made a new kid that looked just like me.

I do support *medicinal* marijuana usage, but that means for cancer, glaucoma, etc not "dude... I'm soooooo burnt, give me some more 'medicine' heh heh". I'm not claiming to be Mr. Straight Arrow, but I think dope is stupid, not glamorous. Yeah, I'm a judgmental opinionated old curmudgeon, not sorry about it either. Just like my adamant support of my 2nd amendment rights, this is an area I'm not likely to ever bend on.

I'm with you Gary... boy howdy, am I with you on this one. However, I think my opinion of those who use drugs are probably a little more harsh than yours.

I never messed around with drugs because I
thought that it was stupid - and still do.

Indeed, I too have no respect for individuals who use drugs. They are social deviants, each and every one; and because they have no souls, a particularly fiery corner of hell awaits them in the afterlife.

I own an issue of Playboy magazine from February of 1970 that has a great panel discussion on "The Drug Revolution." In it, several dimwits like William S. Burroughs, James Coburn and Joel Fort M.D. actually suggest that adults can successfully engage in harmless, recreational drug use while holding down a full-time job -- even supporting a family!

The only panel member I could see eye to eye with was Harry J. Anslinger, who graduated from Penn State in 1915 and obtained his law degree in 1930 from American University. A distinguished civil servant, he served under nine presidents and was once the Assistant Commissioner of Prohibition. "He helped make the dry years dry," the article adds.

He had some poignant quotes:

"Supposedly harmless marijuana smoking is regarded by several doctors as a sign of incipient insanity. Marijuana may even cause psychosis."

"A person under the influence of marijuana can get so violent that it takes about five policemen to hold him down!"

"The American Medical Association, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs have all stated that marijuana has no medical uses and should be considered a social menace. We don't need any more research to show that. I challenge you to name one doctor who has reported a beneficial medical effect of marijuana, outside of the backward areas of the world and that 19th Century folk medicine you [Fort] were mentioning."

Just make sure that you don't transport
marijuana and a straight razor at the
same time.

Really though, for marijuana I am not
concerned. Never smoked it never will,but
if it were on the ballot tomorrow I would
vote to legalize it.

BW, you're basing your assumptions based on 36 year-old scientific knowledge. At that time there were still lots of reputable doctors who thought lobotomy had therapeutic value.
THC is rated as a depressant drug, just like alcohol. However the society finds it socially acceptable to drink a six-pack during the Superbowl game but not to smoke a blunt for the same reasons.
The only reason marijuana was outlawed in the US was as an indirect attack on the hippie movement, which was effective at erroding popular support for US-led wars in the Asian war theatre. The rest of the world just followed suit.
Fortunately in Canada, posession of small amounts doesn't lead to prosecution. Many countries in the world and even some US states are instituting or trying to institute that. As a recreational drug, it is more convenient and less harmful/addictive than alcohol.
I've known many people with families and responsible positions who functioned perfectly in the society even though they toked with their friends from time to time the same way some of you would chat with a friend over a bottle of wine.
Therefore, I am asking you to respect me for who I am and not for my life-style if it's not hurting you.

Sorry BW. I was dealing with some personal issues while following up on the forums and I wasn't following who was saying what in the thread. On top of that there were a couple of previous attacks on potheads before your post so I didn't even read it properly before I started seeing red and organized a counter-offensive against people who think I'm worse than Hitler for taking the occasional (once or twice a month) toke.

If I right on this marijuana was outlawed
in the 1930's. Apparently the suff was
being grown and turned into paper.

Well enter William Randolph Hearst.
Inaddition to being owning numerious
newspapers, he also owned wood
pulp mills that were quite profitable.
Or it could have been hesimply sold
lots of pulp wood to others.

Well along comes this hemp paper and
it was cheaper to produce than wood
pulp paper.

So ole' Willie launches a massisve campaign
against the evils of this devil weed. Well to
make a long story short the stuff was
outlawed and Hearst got rid of a competitor.

Thanks for the historical correction Terry. On a good note, at least they are allowing the industrial use of hemp, so ol' Willie must be turning in his grave. Especially if the use of hemp would end our soft lumber dispute lol. But he was a smart political player. The prohibition was around that time period as well, which means that he used a strong puritanical undercurrent that seems to be showing itself again these days.

The ban on pot came after prohibition on alcohol
had ended in 1933. The marijuana scare came in
the late 30's.

This is kinda funny - when the ban went into effect
people could actually buy a government stamp to
legally posess the stuff. But you actually had to
posess pot before you could get the stamp.
So "Fred" walks into the government office and
says " I would like to buy a Marijuana Stamp."
Government clerk would ask " Do you have some
marijuana?" Fred would say " Yes" and show the
clerk the pot. Fred would then be arrested because
he was in possesion of marijuana without a stamp.

Though funny it's also sad. Most people though as
I have stated before only love freedom when it applies
to themselves.

Oh well, enough of my views. I'll shut up before I make
somebody mad.

If you're talking about me, do us both a favor and don't put words in my mouth because I'm quite capable of saying exactly what I mean and don't need anyone else to make assumptions. I voiced my opinion of drug use, just like you did. You're absolutely entitled to your opinion that drug use is ok and glamorous. I'll ask you to respect the fact that I'm also absolutely entitled to the opinion that drug use is stupid and unglamorous. Seperate yourself from the act, take a step back and take a careful look at where the criticism is directed (hint, not at you *personally* although you took it that way).

I never made an ad hominem attack, I voiced an opinion of the _act_ of drug usage, not you personally so you can back down from defcon 4. I stand by my assertion that drug usage is stupid and I have no sympathy for dopers who get nailed and go to jail. I've seen too many lives get ruined by "casual" drug usage (some of those were pretty close friends, too) to change my opinion now. Whenever I hear someone whining to me that they got busted for dope I find myself *completely* unable to evoke even the barest ounce of sympathy.

The only person mentioning Hitler (at the risk of invoking Godwin's Law on this thread) is you. Of course, I guess people aren't allowed to have differing opinions when it comes to something *you* believe, or are they? I'd like to think that impression isn't true.

Well stated and insightful. That cuts both ways though. Most people love freedom of speech until someone else says something that they don't like to hear or expresses a contrary viewpoint to their own. That makes people timid to stand up and express themselves when it might lead to a confrontation. I may be a lot of things, but timid ain't one of them.

Gary, you're putting words in my mouth now. I never called smoking pot is glamorous. I don't find it any more glamorous than drinking a beer or having a glass or two of wine.
Like any drug pot can become harmful if it's consumed in excess or at inapropriate times. If you smoke pot and drive it's just as bad as drinking and driving. If you're a chronic pothead, you're like an alcoholic, just with bad lungs instead of a bad liver.
With that being said, in our society, alcohol abuse is a much more serious problem than drug abuse, as alcohol is more available and legally/socially acceptable. Just because alcohol is legal and pot is not, it does not mean that it is any less dangerous.
Any substance can be harmful if taken in excess. Too much water reduces the concentration of electrolytes in your bloodstream and can kill you at extreme levels of hydration.
I personally feel sorry for people who abuse drugs, alcohol or any other substances. However, there is a line to be drawn between responsible use and abuse.

As for your comment about freedom of speech, I am not trying to curtail yours, but by the same merits, I am also entitled to express my own opinions. And my opinion runs in the direction of "people who do not recognize the difference between responsible use and abuse and who do not see that many legal foods/substances can be just as or more dangerous than illegal stuff hold a narrow-minded view on this issue."
Unlike some societies that claim to be free and to support free speech while arresting people for communist views and doing everything in their power to kill pornography, I really do practice what I preach. I will do everything in my power for a person to express their views even if they are violent and/or racist (and I'm heavily opposed to both attitudes). However, I'll also jump on the stage and express my own opinion and expect them to perform their civic duties as well.

Then you're a better man than me, because one of the places I draw the line is racism. Like you, I'm heavily opposed to it, but unlike you I'm just completely incapable of letting people express it (unless they're capable of expressing it while spitting out teeth, that is). I still have some work to do in my "freedom of speech" attitudes. There's generally at least one thing that each of us has a real hard time stomaching... for some it's flag burning, for others it's criticism of government policy, abortion, religion, drug use, etc. For me, my hot button is racism. Well, that and book burning. And there's that child pornography thing. People who abuse children need to be detesticled with a fishhook and some needle nose pliers. Wifebeaters too... and animal abuse. Censorship. Telemarketers and spammers...

Ah hell, I guess I have more work to do than I thought I did.

I agree with you on most of these counts Gary. I am against any form of child abuse including child-beating. People who distribute child pornography are just distributing evidence of their criminal acts and should be thrown in jail for a long time for that.
I'd allow people to burn flags, but they would lose my respect. If you don't like the policies, bash the government, not the country -- that's the sensible approach.
Telemarketing and spamming are just legalized commercial harassment. It should be dealt with on a UN level and cut off any country that supports spamming and unsolicited calls from global communications.
I think we've both done enough griping and complaining. Terry is absolutely right with his eloquent point. Cheers to both of you!

I just felt like I have to appologize to the SRP community for losing my cool in this thread. This place means a lot to me and I hope that if I have offended any of you gentlemen, you can find it in your hearts to forgive me.
