I don't think it's worth your while to move down there from the US. You already live in a first world country and got a nice climate in Florida.
From what I have heard, there are some issues with unemployment and a weak dollar down there.
If you want to see what it's like to live there, apply for a work permit, chill there for a bit and if you set yourself up nicely, you can always apply for citizenship.
Another thing I would be worried about is anti-American sentiment. An American friend of mine experienced it in Australia. I am not sure how it is in NZ.
These are just some things to think about before becoming a citizen, with all the rights and RESPONSIBILITIES, of another nation.
I totally Agree
with FiReSTaRT.
Apply for a workholiday visa and look arround for a year.
Besids applying for a citizenship you need to have a PR first ( permanten residency)
like in the US a "Green Card" .
.....
A few valid points but most is not correct.Quote:

Our police don't carry guns.
We have the lowest unemployment in our history right now.
Technically we are very advanced.
We have no terrorist threats.
You can go on holiday and leaving your house unlocked and it will all be there when you return.
We drive on the correct side of the road.
NZ is one of the most stress free countries in the World.
Just my $50,000 worth :D

i'm guessing it won't be too hard to get a work permit with a BA in math, and it seems like i have to anyway, as someone pointed out, to establish residency for something like five years before i can even apply. i checked wikipedia, and based on 2005 estimates, their rate of unemployment is lower than ours. they have a much lower per capita income, but you're talking to a guy who's been living on 6000 dollars per year for waaayy too long. i also found out that their public health system has its problems, but i don't have any insurance, so, again, just about anything would be a step up. has anyone ever visited? impressions?
pahahaha, perfect climate!......maybe if i was a mosquito....

The public health system is free for all accidents and emergencies etc..nothing wrong with it. Even ambulances are free.
You can have personal medical insurance for elective surgery.
Income is relative to the country you live in. I have a very nice lifestyle but my income would not support me in Europe etc..but then I don't live there.
Any one in technology, medical, engineering, sciences etc is an almost definite. If you have a criminal record though....forget it.

ps I was born in London, have travelled and worked all over the world and even if I won lotto I would choose to live in NZ. A great place for kids to grow up too.
Just say you're Canadian :)Quote:

the guy who went (the idiot with the soul patch) is a sort-of buddy of mine and he tells me amazing stories about the place. america has its pros and cons, but lately the cons are starting to weigh more heavily (but please don't lets start any flaming; if you want to hear my point of view, send me a pm and we can duke it out there).
gary, do you know if new zealand treats its teachers all that well, and if they need them as badly as they do here in the states (really bad in the case of math/sciences)?
Teachers are desparately needed. By from what I understand it's the same all over the world. Over worked and under paid.
Gary
I agree with Garythepenman’s comments as a resident in NZ, Gary is in a better position than I to comment on NZ but as an Australian who has lived and worked in New Zealand and have visited there numerous times I have nothing but praise for the people of New Zealand. They are generally about the most accommodating and friendly people that I have met anywhere in my travels both inside and outside of Australia. New Zealanders enjoy a lifestyle that would be hard to better anywhere else in the world. I would still be in NZ only work took me elsewhere!
As for Anti American sentiment I’m not aware of any and the same goes for Australia. However I think NZ did tell the U.S to Stick the ANZUS Treaty and to take their nuclear powered navy ships elsewhere but there was no offence intended….LOL
Both New Zealanders and Australians tend not to take themselves too seriously, a concept that some Americans that I have met seem to struggle with!
Living in NZ certainly has more pros than cons but if you want to move to NZ learn to love Rugby, the colour Black and Beer!
That’s my A$41,216.33 worth

they do alright here if you're single. a high school teacher is no kind of job to raise a family on, but i don't want one (a family), anyway. around here they start at 36k a year with good benefits. plus, you get your summers off so really you're getting the salary for nine months, not 12. i don't know how college teaching is; i'm only getting an undergraduate degree and you need at least a master's to teach college.
Sounds like Canada, eh.Quote:

New Zealand sounds pretty cool. After the wife checked out the link describing the place, she said it might be a good consideration for a vacation this coming year.
Bill,
Free accomodation in the South Island for you if you come down.
Gary
geez, you give away a few lousy razors, and everyone's falling all over themselves to put you up for the night. where're all the accomodations for the little guy?
...i think i'm supposed to put a smiley here so people know i'm making jokes...
